South Carolina head womenโs basketball coachย Dawn Staleyย spoke to the media on Wednesday ahead of the teamโs SEC opener against Alabama, which is set to tip off at 2 p.m. on New Yearโs Day. Hereโs everything she had to say.

Do you have an update onย TaโNiya Latson? Was she able to practice today?
โNo, no practice today. Wonโt play tomorrow.โ
Do you know about her availability for Sunday yet?
โYou take it day by day. Iโm hoping; Iโm praying. If not, we got to keep going.โ
The gauntlet that is the SEC schedule starts tomorrow. How are you approaching it?
โI mean, itโs here. Thereโs no hiding from it. You just got to take it straight on. It isnโt for the faint of heart; it is for programs that want to win national championships. If you play in the SEC, it affords you to compete for national championships. And weโre excited about that.โ
What are you happiest about with your team as you head into conference play?
โIโm happy that weโre playing better together. Like, weโre practicing like we want to play. And thatโs a really good thing. So, weโre not surprised by the progress that weโre making in games because weโve been practicing that.
