As the Toronto Maple Leafs prepare for a pivotal offseason, contract negotiations surrounding captain John Tavares have become a focal point of speculation. With the veteran center set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2025, uncertainty looms over his future with the team.
Former NHL head coach Bruce Boudreau has now weighed in, naming the Colorado Avalanche — led by superstar Nathan MacKinnon — as a potential landing spot if talks with the Leafs falter.
A Potential Shift in the Hockey Landscape
Tavares, who inked a lucrative seven-year, $77 million contract with Toronto in 2018, has been a cornerstone for the franchise. His leadership and scoring ability have been instrumental in the Leafs’ push toward championship contention. Despite expressing a desire to remain in Toronto, Boudreau highlighted the practical challenges the team faces:
“If there was one other place that I would think that he could go that would be a great fit, it would be Colorado behind Nathan MacKinnon,” Boudreau said during a recent appearance on TSN.

The Avalanche, known for their dynamic offense and strong team chemistry, could offer Tavares a complementary role alongside MacKinnon, potentially reinvigorating his career and strengthening Colorado’s championship aspirations.
Salary Cap Constraints and Roster Challenges
Toronto’s salary cap situation complicates Tavares’ contract extension. The Leafs must balance re-signing other core players like Mitch Marner while maintaining roster flexibility. These financial realities increase the risk that negotiations with Tavares might stall or collapse altogether, opening the door for rival teams like Colorado to pursue the veteran center.
What This Means for Both Teams
For the Maple Leafs: Losing Tavares would be a significant blow to leadership and depth down the middle. However, it might free cap space to retool the roster and invest in younger talent.
For the Avalanche: Acquiring Tavares would bolster an already formidable lineup, adding experience and skill to support MacKinnon and elevate Colorado’s Stanley Cup ambitions.
Looking Ahead
As July 1 approaches, all eyes will be on the negotiations between John Tavares and the Maple Leafs’ front office. Whether he remains in Toronto or makes a surprise move to Denver, the decision will undoubtedly impact the NHL’s competitive landscape for years to come.
