Caitlin Clark, the new queen of basketball, is making waves in the WNBA and proving herself to be a legend in the making.
Despite her now Royal status in the sport, her journey began from humble beginnings in her home state of Iowa. The No. 1 pick in this year’s WNBA Draft has exceeded expectations, recently becoming the first rookie in 16 years to make the All-WNBA first team.
The 22-year-old has earned this honour through hard work and determination, overcoming resistance from her peers both on and off the court.
Born to parents Brent and Anne in Des Moines, Iowa, Clark spent her childhood and formative years before attending college in her home state. It was here that the family raised their budding star in an impressive £500,000 ($650,000) house built on a small plot in 2001.
Unsurprisingly, the four-bedroom property includes a basketball court and ample garden space. In addition to her prowess in basketball, Clark also showed promise in golf, tennis, volleyball and other sports before focusing on the court, with her home environment seemingly aiding her development, reports the Express.
Interestingly, Clark grew up playing basketball with her older and younger brothers, often competing in an age group above her own. Her father insisted she play with the older boys when they couldn’t find a girls’ league in their area, a decision that has clearly paid off in the long run.
The star guard was still at university when she began dating fellow basketball player Connor McCaffery in April 2023, although their relationship wasn’t made public until August of that year. McCaffery was also a player for the Iowa Hawkeyes when they first met, despite being several years ahead of Clark in school.
The 26-year-old is estimated to have a net worth of £1.2million ($1.5m) after transitioning into a coaching career post-graduation, according to Sportskeeda. McCaffery, whose father Fran has been the coach of the Iowa men’s basketball team since 2010, is following in his father’s footsteps. He currently serves as the assistant coach of the men’s team at Butler University.
Before this, the 6’5″ talent spent a year with the Indiana Pacers after accepting an entry-level position with the NBA franchise. His move to the Dawgs hasn’t taken him far from Indianapolis, where Clark plays for the Fever .Parents’ concerns Caitlin Clark has been under the magnifying glass, not just for her skills on the court but from the intensity of the limelight that follows her every move in the world of professional basketball.
Critics and fellow players have thrown negative jibes her way, some even questioning whether she merits such attention. Meanwhile, Clark has weathered a series of on-court altercations where it seems rival players have singled her out physically during off-ball plays.
Despite the scrutiny, Caitlin’s focus remains unshaken on her love for the game, although the concern her parents harbour for their daughter’s wellbeing continues to grow.
Speaking to the Washington Post, Clark acknowledged the strain, saying: “They see all this stuff, too. You have to remember, we’re regular people with feelings. I think it’s hard for people to remember, I just love playing basketball. This is my job. This is what I’m here for. I’m not here for all the other stuff.”
