Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs won their eighth game of the season in last-second fashion on Sunday Night Football. They are the best team in the NFL at 12-1 but fans at home are tired of the luck always falling in their favor.
Do the officials give a pass to the back-to-back reigning Super Bowl champions? There will always be cries of “rigged” when the best team in the league narrowly escapes the clutches of defeat at the last possible moment, but there were multiple instances of questionable no-calls.
Is the NFL rigged for the Kansas City Chiefs?
First and foremost, Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor seemed to get away an extra step on his pass protection throughout most of the evening. It happened so often that Chris Collinsworth was forced to call it out on the NBC broadcast. Kansas City’s 330-pound offensive lineman used a subtle lean and what looked like a clear false start to gain an advantage against Joey Bosa.
One drive later, the Chargers were flagged for defensive pass interference. However, there was a lot of contact back and forth with both players. JuJu Smith-Schuster was just as physical as Kristian Fulton, which some fans believe warranted an offensive pass inference penalty. The Chiefs scored on that drive.
Los Angeles ultimately took a one-point lead with four minutes and 35 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Kansas City drove 47 yards on 14 plays to win the game on a walk-off field goal as time expired.
Patrick Mahomes picked up a big first down on a 10-yard run as the offense crossed midfield. It was a classic scramble from the Chiefs’ quarterback in crunch time but some fans at home could not believe the offensive line was not flagged for holding.
The cries of “rigged” will always follow the best team in the NFL. Especially when Kansas City continues to escape by the hair on their chinny chin chin almost every single week.
Mahomes sparked a rules controversy by pretending to run out of bounds against the 49ers. CBS created a collusion theory about the Chiefs because of a hot mic against the Broncos. Sunday Night Football is just the latest controversy, if you can even call it that.
