Angel Reese, Chicago Sky Send Strong Response to Hate Speech

Despite being one of the most popular female athletes in the United States, Chicago Sky star Angel Reese is not immune from cyberbullying. In fact, one could argue that the 22-year-old is even more susceptible because of her status.

This is exactly why Reese and the Sky recently released a powerful ad aimed at combating the negativity of these attacks. In a recent press release, Sky Chief Marketing Officer Tania Haladner explained why the organization is now using AI to block hateful posts from reaching players’ feeds.

“The mental health of female athletes is heavily affected by social media comments, and with more eyes on the WNBA, it’s only gotten more challenging,” Haladner said. “I’m so proud of our players who are lending their voices to support this initiative and help demonstrate that supporting mental health awareness is a priority that requires teamwork.”

The team, together with the Angel C. Reese Foundation, published the ad on Thursday.

As pointed out in the video, 87% of female athletes are subjected to hate speech on a regular basis. This is why the team is taking measures to protect the mental health of players.

Reese did not have any talking lines in the video, but on this particular occasion, her actions speak way louder than words — in more ways than one.

Reese and the Sky are in action on Thursday as they take on the Phoenix Mercury in their first game back from the Olympic break.
