Angel Reese opened up on the decision to fire Weatherspoon
On the latest episode of her podcast, Unapologetically Angel, Reese spoke out on the decision to fire Weatherspoon, describing herself as heartbroken.
The Sky dismissed the head coach after just one season in charge following a disappointing campaign that left them with a 13-27 record.
After fighting for the playoffs for much of 2024, an injury to Reese on September 7 ended any chances of a run to the postseason.
The 22-year-old herself enjoyed a stellar debut in the WNBA, setting a record with 15 consecutive doubles and averaging 13.6 points.

When the decision to fire Wetherspoon was announced, the No.7 draft pick got emotional.
“I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life,” Reese posted on X in September.
“All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed.
“I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short amount of time that will last forever.”
Now speaking four months later with time to accept the choice, the 22-year-old discussed the subject again after Seattle Storm guard Skylar Diggins-Smith asked her about Weatherspoon
“I was so heartbroken,” Reese responded.

Reese had a stellar debut season in the WNBA, making the All-Star team
“She understood me, I’m big on relationships and she knew what was best for me and the team.”
Weatherspoon commanded the respect of WNBA stars because she is regarded as one of the greatest ever players in women’s basketball.
The now 59-year-old is a five-time All-Star, a 1986 Olympic champion and led Louisiana Tech to the NCAA title in 1988.
Weatherspoon became a coach following retirement, starting first at Louisiana Tech before becoming the assistant for NBA side the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Sky named Tyler Marsh, who left his role as the Las Vegas Aces’ Head of Player Development, as their new head coach in November 2024.
The WNBA returns on May 16 and opening weekend includes a blockbuster clash between Reese’s Sky and Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever.
