Florida Panthers star forward Matthew Tkachuk has admitted—somewhat begrudgingly—that Brad Marchand is reshaping the team’s locker room culture, and for one very specific reason: his relentless competitiveness.
Appearing on the Up & Adams Show, Tkachuk didn’t hold back when discussing the unexpected but undeniable influence Marchand has had on the Panthers since his arrival. The two were once fierce rivals—Tkachuk, the gritty, outspoken face of Florida hockey; Marchand, the polarizing agitator known league-wide as the “Rat King.” But now, in a twist that seems ripped from a hockey movie script, they’re sharing a bench—and a mission.
“He’s great for the room, always talking, bringing guys together,” Tkachuk said, his tone blending admiration with the faintest tinge of reluctant acceptance. “He’s got that edge, and it’s contagious. As much as it pains me to say it, he’s really helped elevate the locker room.”

That “edge” has long defined Marchand’s career. For over a decade, he was the bane of opposing teams while leading the Boston Bruins with a mix of skill, grit, and bravado. But his antics weren’t just for show—they fueled his teams, drawing fire from enemies and passion from teammates. Now, that same energy is firing up the Panthers in ways even Tkachuk couldn’t ignore.
“He gets under your skin, even when he’s on your side,” Tkachuk admitted with a wry smile. “But the truth is, that fire… it lights everybody up. We’ve got a swagger now, and a lot of that comes from him.”
It’s a dynamic that’s hard to imagine if you followed their past clashes. In previous seasons, Tkachuk and Marchand frequently found themselves jawing at each other across the ice, trading hits and chirps as two of the NHL’s most notorious agitators. But Florida’s front office saw something more than just rivalry—they saw potential chemistry.
And they were right.
Now united in Florida’s push to defend their Stanley Cup hopes, the duo has found common ground, each bringing his own brand of toughness and passion to a team that thrives on energy. Marchand’s arrival hasn’t just added another veteran to the lineup; it’s shifted the emotional heartbeat of the team.
“We’ve always been a tight group,” Tkachuk said. “But Brad’s got this way of pulling everyone into the fight. Practices are more intense. Games feel more personal. It’s like we’re not just playing—we’re proving something.”
That mentality has been on full display during the Panthers’ current playoff run. With Marchand injecting veteran leadership and Tkachuk continuing his all-out, high-impact performances, Florida looks more dangerous—and more united—than ever before.
Head coach Paul Maurice has even acknowledged the shift.
“Brad came in and just clicked,” Maurice said in a recent press conference. “He challenges guys, he talks nonstop, and he holds everyone accountable—especially himself. That rubs off.”
Still, for Tkachuk, the adjustment hasn’t been without its awkward moments.
“There are days I still look across the room and think, ‘What the hell is he doing here?’” Tkachuk laughed. “But then he goes out and stirs the pot, gets under someone’s skin, and gets us fired up—and I get it. That’s who he is. And maybe we needed a bit more of that.”
The mutual respect, once hidden under layers of animosity and on-ice battles, has blossomed into something rare in professional sports: a begrudging but genuine partnership.
“You don’t have to like someone to respect the hell out of them,” Tkachuk concluded. “Turns out, I actually like him too. But don’t tell him I said that.”
As the Panthers continue their playoff charge, the hockey world is watching this unlikely duo redefine what leadership looks like. In a locker room once led by youth and raw intensity, Brad Marchand has added something else—perspective, experience, and a fierce commitment to keeping the fire burning.
And even if Matthew Tkachuk has to admit it bitterly, there’s no denying: the “Rat King” has changed the game in Florida.
