Social media explodes as Milaysia Fulwiley news makes the rounds
The Columbia area star had just completed her second season with the team.
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina sports world was stirred up Friday with news on the future of South Carolina Gamecocks guard MiLaysia Fulwiley appears to be leaving the school.
The Greenville News first reported Friday that Fulwiley plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, citing unnamed sources. A short time later, other outlets including ESPN, also said they had been told she was going to the portal.
The NCAA does not publicly release which players are in the portal, and Fulwiley did not comment on the news on her social media channels. The University of South Carolina typically doesn’t comment on portal decisions as well.
The transfer portal is typically the first step in the process for a player to leave one team and go to another. Once in there, other teams can make offers for them to sign with them. Entering the transfer portal does not guarantee a player is leaving, as there have been examples of players returning to the school they’re currently playing with.

Fulwiley had just completed her sophomore season at South Carolina, helping lead the team to a second straight national title game appearance. She was second on the team in scoring with nearly 12 points a game.
She wasn’t a starter but frequently played key roles in contests, often being brought in to spark a rally or run. For her efforts, she was named the SEC Sixth Woman of the Year and was All-SEC Second Team. She was also a finalist for the Dawn Staley award, a national recognition for players who exhibit good ball-handling skills, show an ability to distribute the basketball, and possesses the will to win.
She was also named to the SEC Tournament All-Tournament Team as USC won the league postseason title.
Fulwiley is a Columbia native who starred at W.J. Keenan High School. She was one of the top recruits in the nation in 2023, and her play, including her ball-handling and drives to the basket, garnered national attention even before she ever took the court for the Gamecocks.
Earlier this week, Ta’Niya Latson, the leading scorer in Division I last season, transferred to South Carolina from Florida State. She averaged 25.2 points a game.
