Caitlin Clark: Fever Beating Mercury Was ‘1 of Our Biggest Wins’ of 2024 WNBA Season
The Indiana Fever looked like a well-rested team in their first game back after the All-Star and Olympic hiatus, earning a 98-89 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Friday.
Speaking to reporters after the game (starts at 6:45 mark), Caitlin Clark credited the Fever’s previous victory at Phoenix on June 30 as “one of our biggest wins of the season” because it helped jumpstart them on this run of success.
“That really kind of boosted us into how we’re playing basketball right now,” Clark said. “We have a lot of respect for how they play the game and how talented they are, and I think that gave us confidence.”
Clark finished with 29 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in 36 minutes. She has recorded double-doubles in nine of her last 12 games dating back to June 19 after having one in the first 15 games of the season.
The Fever held on in this game after a 28-point first-half lead was erased by the third quarter when Phoenix went up 62-61. Lexie Hull’s three on the ensuing possession put the Fever back on top for good.
Going back to the June 30 game that Clark referenced, the Fever earned an 88-82 win by erasing an 11-point halftime deficit. They have averaged 86.4 points in their last eight games starting with that victory over Phoenix.
The Fever (12-15) have opened up a one game lead over the Chicago Sky for the No. 7 seed in the playoff race. They are only two games back of the Mercury for the sixth spot.
Since a 1-8 start to the season, Indiana has won 11 of its last 18 games. The Fever will host the Seattle Storm on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
