Connor McDavid is having one of the worst slumps of his life, failing to deliver in the past seven games. One likely cause of his poor play is becoming apparent—fatigue due to a high workload. McDavid has himself admitted his lack of form and recognizes that he must do better, with supporters and pundits blaming fatigue as the major contributor. But considering his ability, few question that he will recover when it counts most, particularly as the Oilers head towards the playoffs.
The slump in Connor McDavid seems to be due to fatigue from a demanding schedule
Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid is going through what might be the most difficult scoring drought of his life, having a hard time getting his customary elite-level production during the last seven games. Although speculation has circulated about why it is happening, an obvious explanation is emerging: pure fatigue.
McDavid has been candid about his recent bout of struggles, stating that his play hasn’t been as high as his own expectations and that he must do better. In the meantime, most fans and analysts are citing the massive amount of work that he has taken on and are guessing that fatigue is a key contributor to his decline in production.
Even in light of this tough stretch, there is little to question that McDavid will rediscover his form at the most important times. A talent of his level is more than capable of rebounding, and with the Oilers battling their way into the playoffs, the anticipation is that he will get back to the elite level hockey enthusiasts have grown accustomed to.
McDavid entered the 4 Nations after playing four games in three nights. He participated in a best on best tournament on the road and then played a five-game road trip against four playoff teams. In 29 days, he played 12 games against high-quality competition, registering no points and a -12 on ice rating. With most of these games on the road too, it’s a simple reality that McDavid hasn’t actually been home in some time now.
Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal reported that McDavid hasn’t slept at home in 21 days, indicating that the captain needs some rest. “Much speculation about his fall-off in play lately. Sickness? Injury? Or could it be that McDavid has not slept in his own bed in twenty-one days and admirably emptied the tank during the Four Nations Faceoff. He looked to have more jump Saturday but is still not quite himself. He may just need some rest.”
McDavid is experiencing a down season, with one of his lowest scoring seasons in his career. He recovered quickly from an injury and played through illness, possibly due to a long schedule. The focus should be on maximizing McDavid’s performance for the playoffs, as he is considered the best player in the game and is expected to dominate in the playoffs. However, the team must focus on securing his best performance.
