Paige Bueckers is a beloved fan-favorite and one of the most important figures in the rapidly-growing game of women’s college basketball.

It’s rare that the UConn superstar isn’t the talk of social media, but she’s trending even more than usual on Monday.

Bueckers was named the best college athlete in women’s sports at the 2021 ESPYs. Instead of focusing on herself, the then-19-year-old sophomore chose to celebrate the accomplishments of Black women in the sport.

“With the light that I have now as a White woman who leads a Black-led sport and celebrated here, I want to shed a light on Black women,” Bueckers said. “They don’t get the media coverage that they deserve.

They’ve given so much to the sport, the community and society as a whole and their value is undeniable.”

“I think it’s time for change,” she continued. “Sports media holds the key to storylines.

Sports media and sponsors tell us who is valuable, and you have told the world that I mattered today, and everyone who voted, thank you.

But I think we should use this power together to also celebrate Black women.”

Bueckers’ viral speech is once again making the rounds on social media.

“This speech by Paige Bueckers still gives me the chills,” one fan wrote.

“Reminder that paige bueckers isn’t just a great athlete but a great person as well <3,” another added.

“The thing about Paige Bueckers is that as good as she is at basketball, she’s an even better human being,” another said.

Bueckers is set to return for her senior season with the Huskies as the face of college basketball.
