UConn’s win over South Carolina was more than just a victory for the sports world—it was a statement.
With a dominant 87-58 road win, the Huskies ended the Gamecocks’ 71-game home win streak. The team proved that it was prepared for March Madness by securing a victory in a hostile environment. UConn head coach Geno Auriemma shared his thoughts on the game and looked ahead to the NCAA Tournament.

Geno Auriemma Reflects On Respect For South Carolina’s Head Coach
UConn’s win was significant for many reasons, including snapping South Carolina’s impressive home streak. After the game, Auriemma took the time to commend the atmosphere at Colonial Life Arena. He acknowledged how difficult it had become to play at South Carolina’s home court, pointing out that it wasn’t always that way.
“I don’t want to leave here without saying that coming down here is really, really, really hard. It didn’t used to be a long time ago, and I think they made it really special and really hard to play here,” he said.
“The crowd supports the program. They’re fantastic. I remember the very first time we came down here, they had no idea how to behave,” he said. “They’ve never seen anything like this, act like this.”
Auriemma also praised the development of the South Carolina program, crediting the community and staff for making the team what it is today.
“It’s a testament to all the people down here and their staff and what they built. It’s really cool. I really really enjoy it. So, congratulations to everybody down here,” Auriemma said.
Guard Azzi Fudd led the way with 28 points, showing why she is considered one of the top players in women’s college basketball. Forward Sarah Strong also had a standout performance, putting up 16 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists. Paige Bueckers, one of UConn’s biggest stars, contributed 12 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds.
When asked about the team’s progress this season, Auriemma explained that sometimes a team’s potential is clear from the start, but other times it evolves as the season goes on.
“Some years, you know, in training camp…’We got this.’ Right? And then other years it kinda evolves. We’re evolving,” he stated.

UConn’s March Madness Outlook
With a 24-3 record heading into the final stretch of the season, UConn is in prime position for a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. The win against South Carolina not only boosted their confidence but also solidified their position as the potential top-overall seed in March Madness.
Though teams like South Carolina, Texas, UCLA, and Notre Dame are currently slotted as the projected one seeds, UConn’s dominant performance has them right in the mix. The NCAA tournament field is still wide open, but the Huskies have shown they are one of the best teams in the country.
With Selection Sunday still weeks away, UConn has time to secure their top spot and continue their climb toward championship contention. Auriemma, who has led the team to 11 national championships, knows what it takes to win at the highest level, and he’s confident in his team’s ability to compete for another title.
“I really believe we’re going to be a tremendous NCAA tournament team,” he said after the team’s win in Columbia.
As UConn heads into the postseason, Auriemma’s message is clear: the Huskies are not done yet. With their impressive win over South Carolina, the Huskies are ready for the challenges that await them in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
