The family of rising basketball star Ashlyn Watkins has shared a heartfelt message with fans and followers, revealing urgent news about her beloved mother’s health.
The announcement came from California just 30 minutes ago and has already stirred an outpouring of support across social media platforms. At the age of 65, Ashlyn’s mother has been diagnosed with mild diabetes, a condition that, while manageable, comes with its own set of challenges—especially as it affects someone so close to the young athlete’s heart.
“She’s strong, but we wanted to be honest with everyone who’s been following our journey,” the Watkins family shared. “This isn’t a goodbye, it’s a new chapter. We’re adjusting, learning, and staying hopeful.”

Fans of Ashlyn Watkins, known not just for her athleticism but also for her deep bond with her family, were quick to respond with love, prayers, and words of encouragement. Many noted how often Ashlyn credits her mother as her biggest inspiration—always present in the stands, cheering her on, rain or shine.
Though the diagnosis is considered mild and treatable, the emotional toll is understandably heavy. Ashlyn has asked for privacy during this time but remains thankful for the support pouring in.
As her mother begins this health journey, one thing is certain: the Watkins family is not alone—they are surrounded by a community ready to lift them up every step of the way.

Divergent Paths: Ashlyn and JuJu Watkins’ Unique Journeys in Basketball
Ashlyn was raised in Columbia, South Carolina. She attended Cardinal Newman High School, where her contributions led the team to win four consecutive SCISA Class 3A state championships.
In that case, Ashlyn’s athletic abilities were recognized at a very young age when she began dunking and, even better, became a well-known dunker in women’s basketball. She even won the McDonald’s All-American Dunk Contest in 2022.
Ashlyn is currently one of the guards of the South Carolina Gamecocks and is well recognized for her great defensive abilities. She was the leading blocker in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) with a total of 91 blocks, having 9.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in the 2023-2024 season.
JuJu, conversely, came from Los Angeles but became a star during her time at Sierra Canyon High School. In the 2023 class, Powell was the player many colleges wanted. Some of the awards she received were Gatorade National Player of the Year and McDonald’s All-American Game MVP.
The athlete opted for the University of Southern California (USC) which is close to her home and where she has changed the team and herself dramatically as well. In her first year as a college player, she was able to score more points than any other Division I freshman in the past and the Trojans were at the Elite Eight of the NCAA contest after 30 years.
The USC Women’s Basketball Team and JuJu scored no less than after the incredible season. With 23.9 scoring points per game, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists on average, Powell held the national player of the year title.
Shared Surname, Separate Lineages: Clarifying the Watkins Name
The fact that they both have the same last name and at the same time started to show excellent results in college basketball leads to the idea that there might be a family connection. But, there’s no evidence of Ashlyn and JuJu being relatives. Their family origins are separate.
Ashlyn was from South Carolina, and JuJu came from California. Their journey to the peak of college basketball was the result of their different surroundings, teachers, and experiences.
The surname “Watkins” is relatively common, and its occurrence among two prominent athletes in the same sport is a notable coincidence rather than an indication of kinship. Both athletes have carved out their own identities and legacies within women’s basketball, each bringing unique skills and stories to the game.
