Caitlin Clark and the Iowa basketball community were hit with sad news over the weekend. Former Hawkeyes star turned color commentator Jamie Cavey Lang was announced dead at the age of 41 on Saturday following a battle with cancer.

After a stellar run at Iowa, Cavey Lang went on to play professionally overseas. However, she’d end up coming back to her roots and becoming a broadcaster for Iowa women’s basketball games.

As someone who cared a lot about the program, Cavey Lang meant a lot to current and former Iowa basketball players. Caitlin Clark was among those to make a post on social media following this tragic news, stating that she’s thankful to have known her.

“will cherish the special moments we got to share with you,” Clark wrote.

Clark was not the only former Iowa player to make a post for Cavey Lang in her honor. Kate Martin put a photo of the two of them on her Instagram story, stating that she is going to be missed.

“One of the best & funniest people I know,” Martin wrote. “She will be missed”

Cavey Lang spent four seasons at Iowa from 2001 to 2005. In her time, she recorded over 1,200 career points and is in the top 30 scorers of program history. Cavey Lang returned to Iowa in 2016 to join the broadcast team, a role she’d hold until 2023.

Jamie Cavey Lang was once left speechless by a Caitlin Clark buzzer-beater

During her time as a broadcaster, Jamie Cavey Lang got to cover most of Caitlin Clark’s historic run at Iowa. On one occasion, she was left speechless by a game-winner from the future WNBA All-Star.

In one of the final regular season games of her junior year, Iowa found themselves down two with only a couple of seconds left to go in the game. As expected, they went to their top player to try and keep them alive.

Caitlin Clark came flying off a screen with just enough space to get a shot off. Her three-point attempt left her hand just before the buzzer and managed to fall. Thanks to these late-game heroics, Clark was able to seal an 86-85 win for Iowa.

On the broadcast, Cavey Lang was left stunned by Clark being able to get that shot that fall. She went berzek on the Iowa broadcast, later dubbing it the “most amazing” three-pointer she’s ever seen.

Clark’s junior season would mark the end of Cavey Lang’s time with Iowa, as she would step away from her color commentary role in 2023.
