The news reports have made the rounds: New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes wanted to get the puck from his overtime golden goal that clinched the Milan Cortina Olympic gold for Team USA in February, and found out on Wednesday, that it would instead sit in the Hockey Hall of Fame, part of the Olympic display alongside other historic moments, including Meghan Keller’s women’s gold-medal winner. The HHOF is not going to budge.

“We try to take the emotion out of it. We’re here to preserve a game that Jack’s lucky enough to play or we’re lucky enough to work in. Unfortunately, in the easiest words, it was never Jack’s puck to own.”

When the controversy emerged, Pittsburgh Penguins insider Josh Yohe of the Athletic went over to captain Sidney Crosby and asked him if he ever wanted his puck from his overtime golden goal that clinched the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

When asked on Wednesday about his reaction to Hughes’ comments about wanting the puck back, Crosby basically showed how different the two star players are and how far apart their mentalities are.

“I didn’t even think about it that way, to be honest with you,” Crosby told /The Athletic/ on Wednesday. “I was just happy that I scored the goal. I was happy that the puck was going to the Hall of Fame. I didn’t even think about it that way.”

I’m going to say it. Crosby is pure class and just made Hughes sound like an egocentric idiot.

Despite Hughes’ heartfelt plea, it seems the Hall’s decision is final. For now, the golden-goal puck remains behind glass in Toronto, a symbol of history owned by the institution. And Crosby gets it… not sure if Hughes will handle the situation with the same maturity.
