STATEMENT ON THE ESCALATING CONFLICT IN THE MIDDLE EAST

The Humanitarian Coalition is deeply concerned about the escalating military violence in the Middle East that is increasingly putting civilian lives in danger.

More than 100 children were reportedly killed in strikes on a girls’ school in Iran. In Lebanon, displacement has more than tripled in the last 48 hours, with nearly 80,000 people now sheltering in facilities across the country. The situation is worsening and widening, with humanitarian needs rising by the hour as millions of people across the Middle East are experiencing fear, panic and anxiety.

Action must be taken by all parties to protect civilians, especially children and families. We call on all sides to respect international humanitarian law and ensure safe, unhindered access to humanitarian aid throughout the region.

It is imperative that violence against civilians and civilian infrastructure, especially schools and hospitals, cease immediately and that safe access for humanitarian assistance be maintained.

The Humanitarian Coalition’s members are scaling up their response in Lebanon by providing life-saving essential items, including food, water, shelter, medicine and health services. Our member organizations are also on the ground in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Gaza, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, West Bank and Yemen.

We urge leaders to end the violence across the Middle East and seek a resolution that upholds the rights, dignity and safety of all people.

The Humanitarian Coalition (HC) brings together leading aid organizations to provide Canadians with a simple and effective way to donate during large-scale humanitarian emergencies. The HC also partners with Global Affairs Canada to enable its member agencies to respond to lesser-known small and medium-scale disasters.
