Caitlin Clark is arguably the face of the WNBA right now. However, in her rookie season, she encountered some controversial situations regarding foul calls. Like any other league, the WNBA has had its controversial moments with its referees and it seems that this has opened up positions for new talents to take the helm.
Clark Report, a Caitlin Clark fan page on X (formerly Twitter), reported that the WNBA is hiring for two referee improvement positions at $140K — $145K a year. The fan page reported the news by reposting a controversial uncalled foul on the Indiana Fever star last season on Sept. 26.
Upon hearing the news, fans quickly flocked to the comment section of the post to share their opinions on the league’s recent decision. One fan noted that bringing in just two referees was insufficient.
“They need more than 2,” the fan wrote. “They need the LAW to arrest some of the players for assault and GBH. @CaitlinClark22 was lucky she did not end up with an eye injury, head trauma and broken bones. @kaj33 began wearing goggles in the 70s to protect his eyes after suffering multiple injuries.”
Other fans joined the bandwagon and expressed their opinions in the comments.
“good God Almighty… basketball has an officiating problem.. I think I counted 17 times that poor girl was fouled… just on that one possession,” a fan said.
“They need a lot more help than that,” another fan said.
“I hope it helps, but they really need more than two,” another fan said.
One fan joked that the league should not hire officials from the WWE.
“Maybe don’t hire refs from the WWE.”
“Fr I ain’t even got hope for them, NBA refs have also become extremely soft lol… so doubt wnba refs are any different,” another fan said.
Despite the physical nature of the game and some uncalled fouls, Caitlin Clark managed to have an incredible rookie season where she won the Rookie of the Year award and led her team to playoff qualification for the first time since 2016.
Caitlin Clark once thanked a referee for giving her a technical foul
Caitlin Clark has thanked a referee for giving her a technical foul during a game. The Indiana Fever took on the Seattle Storm on Aug. 18 and left with a 92-75 win. Clark received a technical foul in the game but thanked the official for it in a post-game interview.
“I got a technical for basically being mad at myself because I missed the three, and I went and hit the backboard, and he told me it was disrespectful to the game of basketball,” Clark said.
“But I think he fired me up to continue to play a lot harder, I thought we got a lot better after he did that. So, I want to thank him for that.”
Clark also said the foul reminded her of a similar moment as a collegiate basketball player. The Indiana Fever star is enjoying the off-season playing golf and will return to action in May next year.
