Kim Mulkey is the most successful player-turned-coach in college basketball history as she became the first head coach to win national championships with multiple programs at the collegiate level.
Mulkey has been named National Coach of the Year nine times from various entities, and she was selected as the Big 12 Coach of the Year eight times. She’s taken home the New York Athletic Club’s Winged Foot Award after each national championship as a head coach.
She also lead the greatest turnaround in SEC history by a first-year head coach with the LSU Tigers). With all of her accomplishments, Mulkey’s known to be a passionate leader that won’t hide his emotions during games and sometimes that side gets the best part of her, just like what happened Thursday night.
Mulkey smashes clipboard from an assistant’s hands
LSU Women’s Basketball head coach Kim Mulkey was pretty heated Thursday night during a game against the Oklahoma Sooners in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A foul was called on junior guard Flau’Jae Johnson and Mulkey couldn’t believe it as she threw a tantrum and then smashed a clipboard from assistant coach Seimone Augustus, a fomer All-American player.
The reaction of Augustus was priceless as she stood in shock and then disbelief as to what had happened and the level of anger showed by Mulkey. The LSU Tigers head coach got issued a technical foul and she calmed down after a few minutes.
The good news for the LSU Tigers was that they got the win 107-100 and moved to second place of the SEC standings with a 7-1 record, just below the South Carolina Gamecocks, who remains undefeated. The Tigers are also undefeated at home as they continue their quest to make a deep run on March Madness.
A new era without superstar Angel Reese
The LSU Tigers Women’s Basketball want to make a statement after the departure of superstar Angel Reese to the WNBA. Reese was LSU’s leading scorer and rebounder last season. The Tigers were picked to finish third in the SEC behind the defending champions South Carolina and the Texas Longhorns.
In order to do so, the Tigers want to rely on the massive talent of Flau’Jae Johnson and senior forward Aneesah Morrow. Head coach Kim Mulkey has been big on emphasizing speed as she added two guards from the transfer portal during the offseason: Miami’s Shayeann Day-Wilson, Arizona’s Kailyn Gilbert and Mississippi State’s Mjracle Sheppard.
