It is never a good idea to blend mixed martial arts and hockey, and William Lagesson found out why it is a terrible idea.
The former NHL player learned the hard way when he got involved in a physical altercation with another player in the AHL.
Lagesson, a defenseman for the Griffins (the Detroit Red Wings AHL team), placed an opposing player in a chokehold during a fight. He refused to release his hold until the player tapped out.
William Lagesson, who spent the 2023-24 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks organizations, was choking out Adam Raska of the Iowa Wild.
Lagesson received just a two-minute minor for roughing on the play in that same game. He was lucky for now, but it would not last very long.
Fighting has always been a part of the game, but mixed martial arts and wrestling moves should never touch the sport. A chokehold is mainly a technique that forces the recipient to give up before passing out.
Hockey is not the place for the move.
Lagesson signed a deal with the Red Wings this past summer after splitting last season between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks.
William Lagesson Gets His Punishment For Choking Player On Ice
William Lagesson confused the rink for an octagon.
The AHL suspended the Grand Rapids Griffins defenceman for three games this week after he put a chokehold on Iowa Wild forward Adam Raska in a game on Sunday.
Due to his suspension, he will now miss games Friday vs. Milwaukee, Saturday at Chicago, and Sunday vs. Cleveland.
Lagesson has yet to score in over 100 career NHL games with the Ducks, Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, and Edmonton Oilers, but he has 11 assists and 54 penalty minutes.
