A controversial call during the second quarter of the NCAA Tournament championship game left Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley visibly angry at officials.
A foul was called against Joyce Edwards, and people on X are already disputing if it was a bad call or not.
As for Staley, she was visibly not pleased.
In a video shared on X, you can see Staley visibly angry and sharing choice words to an official about the call.
Another video was also shared on X showing Staley’s reaction.
On X, numerous people spoke out against the call.
“That Joyce Edwards call might end up being the game,” one person wrote.
At the time, it was Edwards’ second foul and cut into some of the momentum that the Gamecocks had been enjoying at the start of the game against UConn.
One person wrote about the foul call on X: “Dawn Staley to a referee after Joyce Edwards’ foul: ‘Don’t do this to us!'”
The Gamecocks are facing off against UConn for the National Title in women’s college basketball. Before the game, experts were making comparisons between UConn’s signature star, Paige Bueckers, and the Gamecocks’ reliance on a strong defense.
In a pregame press conference, Staley said that although it’s easier to have a go-to player, her team has found success relying on everyone for the big plays.
“It’s all about the players,” Staley said. “…We don’t have a real go-to player…
To me it’s just old-school basketball where you’re just playing to your strengths, and our strength is our depth, our ability to play together, to play linked up, and I think a staple for us has been our ability to defend…
I hope it gives hope to the other programs…
It makes it easier when you’ve got a go-to player for sure, but it’s not an impossible thing to do if you don’t.
You just have to lean into each other if you don’t.”
UConn had a 10 point lead going into the half.
