‘What can you do against Messi?’: Jurgen Klopp defends Tuchel after Argentina defeat
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp mounted a passionate defense of Thomas Tuchel after England’s semifinal elimination by Argentina, arguing that much of the post‑match criticism was unfair and simplistic.
Klopp insisted that elite football management cannot be reduced to a binary choice between attacking and defending, stressing that the realities of knockout competition are far more complex.
“People always talk after the match as if coaching were easy, as if you just had to choose between attacking or defending. It doesn’t work like that.”
“Football is much more complex,” Klopp said, dismissing pundits who he believes oversimplify the tactical demands of the game.
He pointed out the double standards managers face: “If Tuchel hadn’t tried to control the game and Argentina had come back, the same people would be saying: ‘Why didn’t he defend the lead?’ In knockout football, whatever you do, there will always be someone to criticize you.”
Klopp went further, suggesting that Argentina’s success cannot be explained solely through tactical frameworks.
“This Argentina team has a special mentality. It feels like something truly great is with them right now,” he remarked, highlighting the psychological edge that has carried the South American champions through tense moments.
Ultimately, Klopp reserved his highest praise for Lionel Messi, whose influence he described as decisive and timeless.
“And when you have Lionel Messi… what can you do? He’s 39 years old and still the best player in the world. You think you’ve contained him, that you did everything right, and then he comes up with two assists that change the match.”
“Sometimes greatness decides games. If you don’t understand that, you really don’t understand football,” Klopp concluded.
