Dawn Staley continues to make history both on and off the court after the 54-year-old reached an agreement with South Carolina on a contract extension that will make her the highest-paid coach in the history of women’s college basketball.
On Friday, Staley and South Carolina’s board of trustees came to terms on a new contract that will run through the 2029-2030 campaign. The lucrative deal features an annual salary of $4 million, which will increase by $250,000 each season – meaning she will earn $5.2 million the final year. It also includes a $500,000 signing bonus, bringing the total value up to approximately $25.25 million.
Thanks to the massive extension, Staley immediately becomes the highest-paid coach in women’s basketball – leapfrogging LSU head coach Kim Mulkey and UConn’s Geno Auriemma, who respectively boast total pays of $3.264 million and $3.1 million, per USA Today.
South Carolina has been trying to extend Staley for quite some time, with former athletics director Ray Tanner revealing last August that the two sides had begun to have conversations surrounding a new contract. The 66-year-old expressed optimism that a deal would come to fruition before the start of the season, adding: “I would tell you that certainly as you would guess there are ongoing conversations about a new contract. I’ll share that with you.”
While the proposed deadline was not met, it didn’t take long for South Carolina’s new athetic director Jeremiah Donati – who replaced Tanner last month – to put the finishing touches on an agreement.
“Dawn Staley is a once-in-a-generation coach who has made a tremendous impact on the University of South Carolina,” Donati said in an official statement. “She has elevated the sport of women’s basketball on the national level and here on campus and I am excited that she will be representing our University for many years to come.”

Staley has achieved no shortage of success since coming to Columbia in May of 2008. Under her leadership, the Gamecocks have won three NCAA championships in 2017, 2022 and 2024 – the last of which came during a perfect 38-0 season. South Carolina has additionally advanced to six of the last nine Final Fours, and ranks as one of five college programs to have at least three national titles.
Though Staley will stick around in South Carolina for years to come, the decorated coach has already looked ahead to the footprint she wants to leave on the Gamecocks program and women’s basketball as a whole. “I want my legacy to be an ‘odds beater,’ Staley told SLAM’s Lauren Dreher last May.
“I am an odds beater. The odds said that I wouldn’t be an Olympian, I wouldn’t be the head coach of an Olympic team. To have coached 24 years in this game, I know that I don’t care about a personal legacy. I want to let my players talk about the legacy that they were able to feel every day from our coaching staff.”
