Brittney Griner’s 12th WNBA season is officially over. This is after the Atlanta Dream suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Indiana Fever in Game 3 of their WNBA playoffs first-round series on Thursday.
Griner wasn’t able to do much in Atlanta’s season-ending 87-85 loss, logging just eight minutes off the bench in the series-deciding matchup. The 10-time All-Star finished with five points and one assist in what very well could be her final game in a Dream uniform.
Griner joined Atlanta in the offseason as a free agent. The Dream is just her second WNBA team after spending the first 11 seasons of her career with the Phoenix Mercury. Griner, however, is currently on a one-year deal with Atlanta, which means that she will be an unrestricted free agent in the upcoming offseason.

The 34-year-old veteran is now facing a major career decision. In a few months, she will need to decide if she will remain in Atlanta or take her talents elsewhere. It will also be very interesting to see where the Dream stand in all this, considering how Griner, who previously signed $214,466 contract with the team for one season, was not exactly a groundbreaking addition for them.
Griner started the season as Atlanta’s starting center. However, a mid-season injury left her on the outside looking in. She was moved to a bench role as she recovered from the injury, which ultimately became a permanent move by head coach Kyle Smesko.
“She’s one of the all-time greatest players in the history of the WNBA, and for her to be willing to come off the bench and contribute in this way, I think she knows it’s because we’re trying to make a championship push,” Smesko said of Griner in August. “She knows she’s a big part of that. She knows what she can do coming in in these situations.”
It is unclear if Griner will be able to secure a starting job on another team if she opts to leave Atlanta. Numbers-wise, 2025 was her worst showing throughout her WNBA career. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year averaged 9.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 20.8 minutes per game.
It should be a very interesting offseason for Griner — one that will likely have a significant impact on her future in the WNBA.
