Dawn Staley Confesses Where the Gamecocks Are Feeling the Strain of a Reduced Roster
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley has been clear about the program’s biggest challenge this season. It is not a lack of skill or execution, but the physical and mental toll of chasing a championship with fewer available players. The Gamecocks began the year at a disadvantage after starter Chloe Kitts suffered a season-ending ACL injury before the schedule fully unfolded.
South Carolina also had to adjust when Ashlyn Watkins stepped away for the season, thinning an already limited frontcourt rotation. The cumulative effect of those losses has placed sustained strain on the roster.
Dawn Staley Explains the Pressure Points of a Shorthanded Gamecocks Team
After Thursday night’s 103-44 win over South Florida, Dawn Staley offered a clear-eyed explanation of what has tested the South Carolina Gamecocks most this season. The challenge is not effort or execution, but navigating games with a roster that rarely stays intact.

Staley said managing minutes has become unavoidable with limited healthy bodies. “We have no choice. We only have nine players that are healthy,” she said, explaining why key contributors remain on the floor regardless of the score.
She added that blowouts do not change her priorities, noting, “We’re really aren’t looking at the score. We’re actually looking at just how disciplined and playing to a standard for 40 minutes.”
That focus, she said, finally showed against South Florida. Defensive breakdowns were minimal, and even players with more minor roles stayed engaged. Staley credited that growth to repetition and accountability, explaining that the bench is beginning to respond after long stretches where starters carried heavy workloads because reserves were still developing.
She also pointed to Joyce Edwards as an example of balanced growth. While Edwards is capable of scoring at will, Staley stressed her broader impact. “Joyce isn’t just a scorer. She’s a really great playmaker,” she said, adding that Edwards can consistently make the correct basketball decision, even when she has an advantage.

The roster issues trace back months. Ashlyn Watkins announced in July that she would miss the season, dropping the group to 11 players. Chloe Kitts then suffered a torn ACL roughly a month before the opener, reducing the number to 10.
From there, availability fluctuated weekly. Ayla McDowell missed the North Carolina game due to illness. Maddy McDaniel exited the season opener after banging knees and later missed four games due to injury and suspension.
Agot Makeer was stepped on against Bowling Green, briefly leaving eight available players, and she has since missed time while in concussion protocol. The situation peaked against NC Central when illness sidelined Tessa Johnson and later forced Madina Okot out midgame, leaving seven players.
