Dawn Staley’s roster shortage getting worse as South Carolina finishes win with 7 players

The South Carolina women’s basketball team has been challenged by player health issues this season.

Coach Dawn Staley has only had her full 10-player roster available for two full games.

Despite the limited roster, other players like Ta’Niya Latson and Ayla McDowell have stepped up with high-scoring performances.

Staley indicated that none of the team’s current high school signees would be enrolling early to help with depth.

COLUMBIA — South Carolina women’s basketball’s biggest issue so far in the 2025-26 season is the health of the Gamecocks’ roster.

Dawn Staley says she would have left South Carolina for New York Knicks coaching job

Coach Dawn Staley has had just two full games with all 10 players but the No. 3 Gamecocks (9-1) still have lost just one game.

In the 106-42 win over NC Central on Dec. 7, Staley had eight players for the first half then seven for the second. Madina Okot was a “little sick” and didn’t play because of that, Staley said.

Tessa Johnson was out sick and Agot Makeer was still in concussion protocol. This team is still working to find its identity, which is harder to do with different players available each game.

“It will take a little longer but I don’t see any of that, I only see what’s in front of us,” Staley said of injuries impacting chemistry. “We had eight today, I only see eight, we got reduced to seven, I only see seven. We’re going to play the hand that we’re dealt to the best our abilities.”

A lack of depth is a new issue for Staley, who lost Chloe Kitts and Ashlyn Watkins before the season started, reducing an already smaller roster of 12 to 10.

“For me whoever is healthy lets us know and we can take it from there,” Staley said. “It’s a lot different than it’s been in the past … it’s just a different challenge and we are at our very best when we are challenged. It may not look like it or feel like it but hopefully we can get the same result.”

One of her new players to this small roster is senior guard Ta’Niya Latson, a Florida State transfer who averaged 21 or more points the last three seasons. Latson got back into a scoring rhythm with her first 20-plus game since Nov. 23 and finished with a season-high 32 points. She hit five 3-pointers.

It was her second straight game playing over 35 minutes.

“Obviously it sucks dealing with that … but we have to keep going, that’s (Staley’s) mentality, next man up,” Latson said of the injuries.

With Johnson out, sophomore forward/center Adhel Tac started alongside Okot and Joyce Edwards down low. It was a mix of Tac earning her first start and testing out various rotations among the bigs. Edwards had 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, her fifth game with over 20.

Freshman guard Ayla McDowell had a career-high in minutes with 27 and points with 16, taking advantage of only one other guard on the bench with her. She hit five 3-pointers and was 5-of-9 from the floor.

“Just continuing to work together it’s the main thing we always preach, also being disciplined all together,” McDowell said. “Coach did tell us ‘It’s fun when we’re all playing together’ and that’s something we’re always working on.”
