Brittney Griner’s Old Nickname Resurfaces After WNBA All-Star Announcement.

Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner is headed to her 10th WNBA All-Star game in 2024.

A recent post on the team’s official X (formerly Twitter) account shared spliced clips of Griner in the previous WNBA All-Star game, boasting about her achievements while giving herself a nickname.

“I’m Papa B at the All-Star. Okay?” said Griner in the archival video, as she told the “young lads” that she “gets to be old school” as a nine-time All-Star.

The 33-year-old center has averaged 19.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game during her 11th WNBA season. She’s averaged 17.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game throughout her legendary career in the WNBA.

Griner and Diana Taurasi will help host the 2024 All-Star game at Footprint Center in the desert. Taurasi, at 42 years old, and Griner, at 33, are two of the oldest players rostered on both the Team USA women’s basketball team and the WNBA All-Star team.

This season’s All-Star game will feature the Summer Olympics women’s basketball team roster competing against the WNBA All-Stars. The game will be held on July 20 at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Some of the youngest players that Griner will be facing, who may be considered “young lads” in this scenario, are 22-year-old rookies Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, and the 2023 No. 1 overall pick, Aliyah Boston.

Griner’s “Papa B” nickname fits well for one of the league’s most experienced players. She’s using the “Papa” to show her veteran presence while adding the “B” for her first name.
