Angel Reese Sends Emotional 6-Word Message to WNBA Rookie After Career Milestone

Before she was drafted by the Connecticut Sun, Aneesah Morrow made her mindset clear during a pre-draft event with On3: “Angel is a competitor, and so am I.” That fiery energy is exactly what she brought into the WNBA. With Angel Reese playing for the Sky, a head-to-head showdown between the former LSU stars was almost inevitable. Morrow had teased the matchup as “two dogs clashing,” and on June 15, that long-awaited battle finally arrived. And what a showdown it was!

While everyone knew it was likely going to be a win for the Chicago Sky, considering the Sun had one of the worst rebounding rates in the league, the way Angel Reese nailed it made all the difference. For those unaware, the Chi-Town Barbie dropped her first triple-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists to lead her team to a 78-66 win. It was the kind of dominant stat line you’d expect from the WNBA’s leading rebounder, averaging 11.8 boards per game. But for Reese, this one seemed to carry extra weight; it felt personal. And not just because of fans trolling her for the “mebounds”.

It all happened in the third quarter during gameplay when Reese and Sun guard Bria Hartley were vying for a rebound. Reese was grabbed as she reached for the ball, and she didn’t like how Hartley pulled her hair in the process. Then, Connecticut forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa stepped in between the two players, and Reese responded with a shove. Adding to the fire, Sun’s veteran Tina Charles got involved in the skirmish, exchanging words with the Sky’s guard.

Obviously, both Reese and Charles were hit with technical fouls, but Reese ensured the incident didn’t stop her from making a historic mark. She went two-of-seven from the field and a perfect seven-of-seven from the free-throw line. But besides her performance, what had the Chi-Town Barbie under the spotlight was her bonding with her former LSU teammate. After the game, Reese took a picture with Morrow and posted it on her Instagram story with the caption, “Love my girlyyyyy. Forever locked in.” Well, that’s unique, considering the feud she had with the opponent team, but given the bond LSU teammates share, it all makes sense.

After all, they helped LSU reach the Elite Eight during the 2023–2024 season together. Not just that, they were both named to the All-SEC First Team in 2024, with Morrow averaging 16.4 points and 10 rebounds, while Reese averaged 18.6 points and 13.4 rebounds. Even off the court, Morrow and Reese have been seen supporting each other. In fact, when Morrow showed up on the Orange Carpet, Reese made sure to welcome her with kind words.

“NEES WELCOME TO THE LEAGUE BABY! So proud of you my hearttttt,” she wrote on X, accompanied by a pleading face and celebration emoji. So you know, them celebrating success on the court is nothing new. And considering that Morrow played 0 minutes in this game, we still have the “2 dogs clash” to look forward to. But does it mean Reese will be the same when another LSU mate, Flau’jae Johnson, arrives in the league?

No expectations from Angel Reese as ties with former LSU mate remain broken!

When Angel Reese was at LSU, her bond with Flau’jae Johnson was renowned across collegiate basketball. It was popular to such an extent that they earned the nickname “Salt and Pepper” as they played one-on-one matchups in open gym. But as they grew older in the league, their friendship and bond started to shatter.

And it has been broken to such an extent that Johnson confirmed on June 9th that they are no longer friends: “We’re not friends… but that bond that we had… winning the national championship… you can never take that away from us.” While exact reasons remain unclear from both sides, Johnson mentioned that “locker room stuff” and the intense media attention during LSU’s season were contributing factors.

However, there are reports highlighting that there had been public tension between their mothers following a social media exchange in November 2023, which may have added to the off-court strain. Still, we’ve seen them support each other. As Reese shared in September 2024 with Fox News, “I still support Flau’jae… we aren’t as close… but there are no hard feelings.” So, any sort of friendship is still unclear, but we can expect that the two might reconnect in the future.
