Caitlin Clark’s offseason goal? To become a professional golfer
Caitlin Clark just finished one of the best rookie seasons in WNBA history.
The first overall pick from Iowa helped lead the Indiana Fever into the WNBA playoffs following a regular season where she was named WNBA Rookie of the Year and finished fourth in MVP voting.
Her season came to an end Wednesday night. In the postgame press conference, Clark was asked about what her offseason plans entailed, and she had a quick answer.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do tomorrow. I don’t know what I’m going to do the next day. Maybe play some golf,” Clark said. “That’s what I’m gonna do until it gets too cold in Indiana. I’ll become a professional golfer.”
Clark has been a regular guest at pro-ams in the past, so expect her to make more appearances before her second season with the Fever picks up in the spring.
But until then, it’s time to pick up the sticks.
“Not too much, babe,” teammate Aliyah Boston joked. “Keep it to basketball.”
Unrivaled’s Messi-Like Pursuit of Caitlin Clark Plunges as Ex-LPGA Star Molds WNBA ROTY’s Off-Season Plans
Only four more seats remain in the 3×3 basketball league Unrivaled from its limit of 30 players. And if the reports are to be believed, Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier are eyeing Caitlin Clark with a $150 million Lionel Messi-like deal. However, with the latest update about Clark’s adventures in the off-season, her chances of joining the Miami-based league are too slim.
Ex-LPGA star Martha Foyer-Faulconer was recently seen teaching Clark the tricks of the trade on Friday. She also lauded the 22-year-old for making some “quick adjustments,” that certainly improved her game. “Within the time we were working, we saw some drastic changes,” Foyer remarked. Therefore, going by Clark’s indulgence in golf, it looks as if she is in no mood to join Unrivaled and play basketball in the off-season.
Foyer-Faulconer had one more lesson with Clark on Wednesday at Indiana and was pleased by her short game. In a Tik-Tok video uploaded by Clark, she looked to be quite tense in her shoulders. So, her golfing mentor, who played the LPGA from 1987 to 1995, showed her the correct technique.
Meanwhile, the Iowa-alum is excited to prep for the upcoming LPGA Pro-Am where she will be playing alongside Nelly Korda and Annika Sorenstam. While Clark has taken golf as a second sport, it would come as a surprise that Foyer-Faulconer once wanted to be a baller.
Therefore, she too has shown the same excitement while training Clark, who is looking for a golf home in the Hoosier State. She also shared that Clark is really passionate about the game and is “fun to work with.” Hence, the ex-LPGA star predicts that Clark will be really great at the game. Acknowledging the ROTY’s innate talent, Foyer-Faulconer revealed that “some of this stuff you can’t teach people… They just either have it or they don’t.”
In fact, clips and photos shared on various social media platforms also suggest that the reigning WNBA ROTY might be right-eye dominant. Something a recent tweet where she stands alongside her boyfriend Connor McCaffery proves as he is blinding her left eye. This is quite opposite to her signature Logo-3 shot where she goes to her left to flick the ball with her left thumb.
Hence, it looks as if Clark will deny playing in the league despite getting lucrative offers from Unrivaled.
Is Caitlin Clark’s Unrivaled chapter nearing an abrupt end before even starting?
When Clark was asked mid-season about the hype Unrivaled had created and if she would be willing to join the league, she had clearly stated that she was “just focused on this (the playoffs) right now.” The same question was once again asked when the season ended for the ROTY, however, at the time Clark clearly stated that she wanted to concentrate on golf during the off-season without directly negating her chances of participating in the league.
Next, even during her Instagram update of the season end, Clark ended her message to her fans by saying “See you all in year two” which many felt was a soft way of dismissing her participation in the league. But despite that, it is reported that Clark would be getting a Messi-like offer.
When Lionel Messi made it to the MLS, he was given a base salary, a part ownership, and joining bonuses in the league. It was reported that Clark would be given the same offers to lure her to join the Unrivaled, which is in its inaugural season and hence would need popular players to be successful. But since Clark was making enough money through her endorsements, Rachel DeMita concluded that she did not need the league, instead it was the management of the league who needed her.
Furthermore, another hint that the Des Moines-born would reject the league was when she did not comply with Ice Cube in joining the Big 3, which was also a 3×3 format. One she is not exactly thrilled to be a part of as she suggested when fans wanted her to play in the Paris Summer Games for the 3×3 competition after Cameron Brink’s injury. Hence, it looks as if Clark doesn’t want to make the adjustments in her game for a 3×3 league.
And now her golfing practice and subsequent plans of buying a golf home clearly show that she might be busy in the off-season with her second choice of sport instead of going back to practicing another format of basketball. Still, only time will tell if the Iowa sensation is already bored of staying away from the court.
