The Kansas City Chiefs are 0-2 in the preseason after losing to the Detroit Lions, but headlines are focused on Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce’s latest unbelievable play.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to the media after Saturday’s loss to the Detroit Lions, fielding multiple questions focused on Mahomes’ behind-the-back pass highlight play.
“I heard he blamed (Travis) Kelce, but that’s alright. He does it in practice every day, and I’m alright as long as it’s a completion.”
The play occurred during the first quarter, and it appeared to be planned from the seamless execution, although Mahomes insisted it was a mistake from the Pro Bowl tight end. Reid isn’t buying the reigning Super Bowl MVP’s excuse and doesn’t understand all the commotion.
“Listen, they do it in basketball every game, several times in every game,” said Reid. “So I mean, It’s not that big of a deal behind the back,” said Reid. “I don’t think I have (seen it before in a game), but I see it every day in practice.”
Reid doesn’t seem bothered by the creative play but immediately responds to reporters interested in his reaction if it doesn’t work in a game.
“We’re gonna think positive,” said Reid. “I know he threw Kelce under the bus. I know he said it was Kelce’s fault. I heard all that. It wasn’t. They play off of each other.”
The behind-the-back pass might make the playbook, but it won’t be used regularly as Reid always looks to expand the offense’s capabilities.
