Chiefs vs. Chargers: Patrick Mahomes, Xavier Worthy strike for long touchdown

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense took some time to get in rhythm against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday afternoon but finally found their groove when Patrick Mahomes hit Xavier Worthy for a 54-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
The outstanding play came after a disastrous start for Mahomes at SoFi Stadium and effectively kick-started Kansas City’s effort to earn a fourth consecutive win to start the regular season.
Star wide receiver Rashee Rice sustained a knee injury in the first quarter, and Worthy stepped up when the Chiefs needed him most to get Kansas City on the board.
Check out this video of Worthy’s incredible catch, which was posted by the Chiefs’ official account on Twitter:
This game is far from over, but this pitch and catch from Mahomes and Worthy may be just what Kansas City needed to get into winning form against the Chargers.
Stay tuned to see if the Chiefs can stay hot in Los Angeles.

It would appear that Xavier Worthy spoke the possibility of playing for the Kansas City Chiefs into existence.
“I’ve been calling it, and I’ve been saying it since the beginning of the year, that I was going to be going to the Chiefs,” Worthy said, per a roundup of quotes released by the University of Texas Friday afternoon. “Everyone thought the rest of the NFL was never going to let the Chiefs get to me, but I’m here. I’m excited to get to play with Pat, and seeing the success that Tyreek Hill had with this offense, I feel like it’s amazing.
“So, at the beginning of the year, everybody’s dream is to play with Patrick Mahomes, who’s one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, so just to be able to play with him, everybody talks about it, but I’ve been saying it for a while, ‘I’m going to be a Chief.’ So, I just it put it in the air and now I’m here. It’s amazing.”
The Chiefs on Thursday evening traded up from No. 32 to No. 28 in order to draft Worthy, a trade that included six draft picks. The Bills then took that 32nd overall pick and shipped it to the Carolina Panthers as part of another four-pick trade, which included the Bills getting No. 33, the first pick of the second round on Friday night. It is widely believed the Bills will use No. 33 on Worthy’s Texas teammate, wide receiver Adonai Mitchell.
Worthy’s arrival in Kansas City comes as the Chiefs gear up for an unprecedented Super Bowl three-peat, having won it less than three months ago in spite of a dire wide receiver situation beyond rookie Rashee Rice.
“I talked to the Chiefs at the Combine, and that was probably the only time I talked to them,” said Worthy, indicating he never conducted a top-30 visit in Kansas City. “Just knowing it was a possibility, I just kept my hopes alive, and it happened.
“I’m a small player, so I pride myself on being a difference maker and somebody who’s going to make a play, whether that’s being tough, making a big play blocking or receiving the ball, or special teams, anything. So, I just pride myself on heart, and I feel like that’s what motivates me and makes me different.”
Across 39 career games as a Longhorn, Worthy caught 197 passes for 2,755 yards and 26 touchdowns. As a junior in 2023, he caught 75 passes for 1,014 yards, both team-highs, to go along with five touchdowns to help Texas advance to the College Football Playoff for the first time.
