Fans stunned as Patrick Mahomes spotted 'ignoring' one Chiefs teammate after Super Bowl defeat

Fans have been left confused after noticing NFL star Patrick Mahomes ignoring one of his Kansas City Chiefs teammates after their loss in the Super Bowl.

Reigning champions Kansas City Chiefs were humiliated on Monday night as the Philadelphia Eagles comfortably beat them in the 2025 Super Bowl in New Orleans.

Star players Travis Kelce and Mahomes missed out on the opportunity to make history by becoming the first to ever win three Super Bowls in a row, understandably leading to them being clearly upset post-match.

But one thing fans cannot understand, is what caused Mahomes to completely blank one of his fellow teammates after the match had finished.

Going into the highly-anticipated NFL season finale, the Chiefs were the favourites following their victory in 2023 against the Eagles and in 2024 against the San Francisco 49ers, but it wasn’t meant to be as the Eagles got their revenge as they beat the reigning champions 40-22.

After the match, quarterback Mahomes made sure to go over to his teammates on the bench and thank them while also sharing in their disappointment at the result, but he missed out one player.

In a clip posted on social media, the 29-year-old can be seen shaking hands and embracing his teammates, but fans spotted he completely ignored running back Samaje Perine.

Reacting to the moment, one fan asked: “Someone know why he passed Perine the way he did? He even stood up and feels disrespectful in any scenario.”

While another added: “He ignored Perine, a fellow Gator. Not cool.”

And one claimed: “Locker room divided. Smh.”

However, some fans were quick to point out that it was likely completely accidental as Mahomes spotted his close friend Kelce and went over to give him a hug instead.

Monday’s loss marks just second time from five appearances that Mahomes has lost in the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs, the other coming in 2021 at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But speaking after the match, Mahomes admitted his impressive record in the Super Bowl doesn’t make the loss any easier to swallow, saying: “There’s no way around it. Anytime you lose a Super Bowl, it’s the worst thing in the world… it will stick with you the rest of your career.

“I mean these will be the two losses that will motivate me to be even better, for the rest of my career. Because you only get so few of these [Super Bowls], and you have to capitalise on them

“It’s going to hurt for a while, but how can you respond from it?”

“It’s hard to come back from that in the Super Bowl. I have to learn from that and try to be better the next opportunity that I hopefully get.

“I didn’t play to my standard and I have to be better next time.”

Kansas City Chiefs running back Samaje Perine has spoken out for the first time on the viral video of Patrick Mahomes appearing to reject a handshake with him at the end of the Super Bowl.

Fans spotted the Chiefs quarterback Mahomes shaking hands with several members of the team’s offense when the game was lost but he appeared to pass over Perine to hug Travis Kelce.

There was no obvious reason for Perine to be snubbed by his quarterback, leaving fans to wonder if something had occurred behind the scenes.

But Perine insisted that was not the case in a message on social media.

The 29-year-ols responded to a clip of the video and wrote: ‘Lol I actually stood up to untie my pants string, no one blamed anybody. It’s not that deep.’

During the game itself, Perine had only one carry for eight yards but was an important member of the team during the road to the Super Bowl.

In fairness to Perine, the clip did need addressing. It look very awkward.

Beginning with wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and ending with an embrace of long-time favorite target Kelce, Mahomes went down the Chiefs bench in the game’s final moments to share his appreciation for everyone’s contributions.

‘Patrick Mahomes completely ignored Samaje Perine,’ one critic wrote on X. ‘What a loser.’

One responder slammed Mahomes for ‘very poor leadership,’ while another opted for a pun: ‘Not cool Mahomie.’

Perine caught 28 passes for 322 yards and one touchdown for the Chiefs during the regular season on top of 92 rushing yards on 20 carries.

Mahomes was in no mood to point the finger at anyone else when he spoke to reporters after the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans.

‘They played better than us from start to finish,’ Mahomes said. ‘We didn’t start how we wanted to.

‘The turnovers hurt. I take all the blame for that. Those turnovers swing the moment of the game and they capitalized on them.

‘They scored on one and got a touchdown immediately after another. That’s 14 points I gave them.

‘It’s hard to come back from that in the Super Bowl. I didn’t play to my standard and I have to be better next time.’

Mahomes also addressed fans on X, writing after the game: ‘Appreciate all the love and support from Chiefs Kingdom.

‘I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity he has given me. We will be back.’

Now, attention turns to Kelce’s future. He could address the intense speculation around his potential retirement on Wednesday’s scheduled episode of New Heights.
