Flau’jae Johnson looks to have already improved on her performances last season and the Louisiana State University Tigers star had a message for her fans and critics

Flau’jae Johnson sent a fierce eight-word warning to her NCAA women’s basketball competitors before her storming start to the season.

The Tigers star was on fire in the 2023 NCAA Champion’s first game of the new campaign. Eastern Kentucky was on the wrong end of a Johnson masterclass, which saw the 21-year-old help herself to 25 points and five rebounds.

In the past, Johnson has had to play the role of supporting act to the likes of Angel Reese at the Tigers. But now her friend is starring for Chicago Sky in the WNBA, Johnson has been able to take centre stage.

However, those who heard her recent eight-word warning may have anticipated such a ferocious start to the season. She is more than ready to lead LSU to another NCAA title.

Chatting with Sports Illustrated, Johnson was asked about how she felt before the start of the campaign. She said: “It’s on me to make a big splash.”

She then added: “What I learn in basketball about pushing through challenges and staying dedicated translates into my music career, and vice versa. They fuel each other, and I’m grateful I get to live in both worlds.”

Johnson dominated the court at the Pete Maravich Assembly Centre, nailing 10 of 15 shots, going perfect from the charity stripe at three-for-three, and sinking two three-pointers out of five attempts.

Following the game, Tigers’ head coach Kim Mulkey hailed Johnson. She said: “I think it’s obvious that Flau’jae is playing effortlessly. She’s in the greatest shape she’s ever been; it’s coming easy for her.

“[Flau’jae] was phenomenal and I think what you’re seeing from her is comfort. She’s a leader and it’s because she has all the experience and puts in the work.”

Not only is Johnson an NCAA champion, but she’s also made waves as a gifted musician. Her rap talents have caught the attention of many, leading to predictions of a bright future as a rap star as well as a basketball star.

She even made it to the quarter-finals of America’s Got Talent at the tender age of 14. What’s more, she shows no signs of giving up the mic to dedicate herself solely to basketball.

In response to whether she had thought about abandoning music, she confidently said: “I truly believe you can be good at two things and also be successful if you put in the work. We don’t have to be one-dimensional. I’m blessed to have these opportunities, so why not take advantage of them?”
