Her success comes on the back of breaking multiple records, surpassing rookie milestones, and earning recognition from across the basketball world.
Stephanie White’s Guidance for Clark’s Growth
Despite Clark’s phenomenal success in her first year, Coach White emphasized the importance of continued growth, both on and off the court. During her appearance on the Coaching U Podcast, White acknowledged Clark’s high basketball IQ and her swift adaptation to the professional level. However, White stressed the need for Clark to evolve into not just a great player but also a great leader for the Fever.
“She’s a great player, she’s a high IQ player,” White said. “She adjusted really quickly to this league, unbelievably quickly. And now it’s about becoming not just a great player but a great leader for this team, so we can win not just a championship but championships.”
White, who took over as head coach of the Fever in November, expressed her excitement about the prospect of guiding Clark to further success. She noted that while Clark has achieved remarkable things, the focus now should be on developing her leadership skills to help lead the team to even greater heights.
Clark’s Drive to Improve and Grow
White has had a long history of following Clark’s career, having watched her progress since her eighth grade days. White recalled calling several of Clark’s college games while she played for Iowa and watching her grow as a player. This familiarity gives White valuable insight into Clark’s hunger for improvement.
White noted that Clark is eager to enhance her game and improve her skills. The two have already had discussions about areas of Clark’s game that need work, focusing on how to make her more effective and efficient on the court.
“My first conversation with her the other day about Xs and Os was like, ‘Well how do you want to improve?’” White said. “And then we’ll talk about how we want to do that. And then I talk about how we can use her and help her but more efficient and more effective in general.”
White’s Unique Insight into Clark’s Pressures
“Just being there to help her navigate some of the things she’s navigating [is something I’m happy to be able to do],” White stated. “I don’t think that anyone of us can understand what she goes through on a daily basis. She carries a heavy load with our league and with her abilities and her popularity. She’s like Taylor Swift 2.0.”
White’s experience will help her serve as a guide for Clark, providing support as the young star continues to evolve both as a player and as a leader. White looks forward to helping Clark grow into an even more formidable force in the WNBA.
