Chadbourn, N.C. — In the wake of an unimaginable tragedy, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal and Henry County Sheriff Reginald Scandrett have stepped forward to help a grieving North Carolina family bury their four young children, all of whom lost their lives in a devastating house fire on August 30.

The fire, which occurred in Chadbourn, North Carolina, claimed the lives of four sisters between the ages of 2 and 7. A growing memorial now stands outside the family’s home as the community mourns the loss of lives cut tragically short.

Sheriff Scandrett, who is a father himself, admitted the news moved him deeply.
“It’s tragic beyond belief. As a father of two girls and two boys, this is unconscionable. This would touch the hearts of anyone across our nation,” he said.

When O’Neal, a longtime friend and collaborator of Scandrett, heard about the tragedy, he immediately called the sheriff to ask how they could help.

“He touches every one of us—as parents, neighbors, and human beings,” Scandrett said of O’Neal. “Shaq has always had that heart. He told me we had to do something for this family.”

Together, they decided to cover all funeral expenses for the four girls, lifting what Scandrett described as a “tremendous burden during these times.” To make it possible, they enlisted support from sheriffs across metro Atlanta. Importantly, the money came directly from their personal accounts.

A Message of Compassion

Beyond financial support, both men wanted their actions to send a clear message to the grieving family.
“These were innocent lives, full of promise, taken far too soon,” Scandrett said. “This was not just a gesture of support—it was a moral responsibility.”

O’Neal’s message to the family was equally direct: “You are not alone in your pain. We see you, we mourn with you, and we are here to help you carry this burden in any way we can.”

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze. Meanwhile, the mother of the four girls faces involuntary manslaughter and child abuse charges. Sheriff Scandrett emphasized that all funds were coordinated through the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office to ensure they reached the family properly.

Though the tragedy occurred hundreds of miles from Henry County, Georgia, Scandrett said distance was no barrier when lives are lost and families are hurting.
“When Shaq calls and says there’s a family in need, I don’t hesitate,” he said.

In the face of heartbreak, the combined compassion of a sheriff and a sports icon has offered a grieving family something invaluable: dignity, support, and the reassurance that they are not facing their sorrow alone.
