I don’t want money, I want my mom,” said the little girl – What Patrick Mahomes did next will shock you
She looked tired, worn down, like the weight of the world was pressing down on her shoulders. She asked if I knew anywhere hiring—said she’d do anything, just needed cash fast. I told her I’d ask around, but she didn’t wait. Said she couldn’t.”
Patrick leaned in slightly. “Did she say where she was headed next?”
The woman hesitated. “She mentioned something about a church on 8th and Broadway. Said they sometimes help out with shelter or jobs. But she was in a rush, like she was scared or something.”
Patrick nodded, gently thanking her. Sophia clutched his hand tightly as they left, her small fingers trembling. He could feel it—the fear, the hope, the silent question she hadn’t asked aloud: Was this really going to work?
As they drove toward 8th and Broadway, the clouds that had loomed all morning finally began to break. Sunlight pierced through in golden shafts, casting long shadows over the city. Sophia was quiet again, watching the streets as though any second her mother might appear on one of them.
The church was old but well-kept, tucked between two larger buildings. A small garden bloomed out front, and the doors were wide open. Inside, the sanctuary was quiet except for a few volunteers organizing canned goods. Patrick approached a woman stacking supplies and asked about Elena.
The woman paused. “Ramirez… yes. She came by. It was late. She looked like she hadn’t eaten in a while. We gave her a meal, let her rest. But the next morning, she was gone.”
“Did she say where she was going?”
“She didn’t, but…” the woman frowned. “She asked about shelters near the bus depot. Said she might try to get out of L.A.—to someplace quieter.”
Sophia looked up sharply. “She always said she wanted to go somewhere with trees,” she whispered.
Patrick knelt beside her. “Do you know what place she meant?”
Sophia nodded slowly. “Fresno. She had a friend there once. She said it was quiet, and there were trees, and no one looked at you like you were broken.”
Patrick stood, already pulling out his phone. “We’ll check every shelter between here and Fresno. And if she’s out there… we’ll find her.”
And in that moment, Sophia believed him.
