The Indiana Fever may be about to lose one of star Caitlin Clark’s favorite teammates after Erica Wheeler confirmed she would be testing free agency.

Clark and the Fever enjoyed an impressive 2024 campaign, one which saw the former win the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year. However, they were ultimately bounced from the playoffs in the first round.

The first-round exit means attention has now been turned to the 2025 season, which begins in May. Stephanie White will be taking up the reins from fired coach Christie Sides – with the Fever now focused on making improvements moving forward.

Before the new season begins however, teams will have to navigate free agency. Starting this week, teams are able to negotiate with free agents, although no deal can be officially signed until February 1.

The Fever are expected to lose 2019 WNBA All-Star Erica Wheeler, with the 10-year veteran posting on social media she expects to test free agency.

Posting on social media, Wheeler wrote: “I’m letting ya’ll know now! Ima drop some hints but ima be real petty about it! It’s all fun and games tho! Don’t curse me out.” She added: “My agent sent me a list for free agency. Tuhhhhh.”

And if Wheeler does opt to leave Indiana, then the Fever will be down a player who Clark told reporters back in September had helped her ‘navigate her rookie season’. “[Erica Wheeler] has been incredibly supportive of every single person on our team,” Clark told reporters.

“I think she understands me well. She’s always there, whether the moments are great or not so great. She’s there to help me through it, or celebrate with me, no matter what.

“I think that speaks to her experience in this league. She knows how things go. She’s helped me navigate my rookie season, giving me insight into how the league works, what to expect, and what teams will try to do.”
