“It Scares Me” — Patrick Mahomes’ Mom Opens Up About Her Biggest Fear for Her Superstar Son Ahead of New NFL Season
Patrick Mahomes has become a household name, inspiring millions of fans and even a few rivals throughout his remarkable NFL career. But behind the glitz, the records, and the Super Bowl rings, there’s one supporter who has been with him since day one: his mother, Randi Martin.
As the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback prepares for his ninth NFL season, Mahomes stands as one of the league’s most dominant figures. In just seven seasons as a starter, he’s led the Chiefs to five Super Bowl appearances and three championships—a level of success reminiscent of Tom Brady’s legendary run with the New England Patriots.
A Mother’s Ever-Present Worry
While Randi has treasured every moment of her son’s journey, she admits there’s one aspect of the game she’ll never get used to: the constant risk of serious injury.
“It is a fear that I have. I don’t normally like to speak about it, but at the same time, I keep thinking it’s gonna get easier to watch,” she revealed in a heartfelt video posted to her Instagram.
Randi’s concern isn’t limited to her own son. She feels for every one of the more than 1,500 players who put their bodies on the line each week in the NFL.
“And we had injuries. And so it’s something that I always tell them to focus on your body, listen to your body,” she explained. “Listen to your coaches and the doctors. Also, we all know that football is a contact sport, and it’s something that I’ve accepted.”
Randi’s empathy extends across all teams: “Every player’s team when it comes to injuries, anyone on any team gets even a little bit hurt, I lose my breath for a moment. And I’m praying for each and every one of them.”
Mahomes is renowned for his toughness, often playing through pain and even defying head coach Andy Reid’s advice to sit out after injuries—like the time he continued to play on a rolled ankle.
The Mahomes Family Grows
Off the field, Randi has watched her son’s family blossom. Patrick and his wife Brittany are proud parents to three children, and Randi is a delighted grandmother, affectionately known as “Grandi.”
In July, Randi shared a heartwarming Instagram post after spending a family day with her grandchildren. “My heart is full. Grandi Camp 2025!! Grandi loves you Sterling, Bronze and Golden,” she wrote. “There’s nothing better than spending time with them. Covering these sweet babies in all the prayer and love. Prov. 3:5-6.”
The Mahomes family now includes four-year-old daughter Sterling Skye, two-year-old son Patrick “Bronze” Lavon, and the newest addition, Golden Raye, born in January.
Chiefs Bolster the Roster
As the new season approaches, Randi—and Chiefs fans everywhere—are watching closely as head coach Andy Reid continues to build around Patrick. In April’s NFL Draft, the Chiefs addressed a key need by selecting offensive tackle Josh Simmons at the end of the first round. Despite suffering a torn patella tendon last October, Simmons has impressed during training camp and is expected to be a key protector for Mahomes.
In the fourth round, Kansas City added wide receiver Jalen Royals, who’s already turning heads. When asked about his early chemistry with Mahomes, Royals said, “Just trusting him.” With Rashee Rice potentially missing the start of the season due to suspension, Royals is eager to seize any opportunity that comes his way.
“Man, that culture over there, that winning culture [excites me],” Royals said. “I need to be about my business, lock in and embrace the Kansas City culture. I took a backseat [at Utah State] when I got there… And when my chance came up I took full opportunity of it. I feel like when you get to the NFL, whenever your opportunity arrives, you just have to embrace it.”
A Season of Hope and Heart
With a reinforced offensive line and new weapons at his disposal, Patrick Mahomes is ready to lead the Chiefs into another promising season. And through every snap, every touchdown, and every challenge, his number one fan—his mom—will be watching, cheering, and, as always, praying for his safety and success.
