Italy Reportedly Distances Itself from Israel as European Shift Gains Momentum
Italy Breaks Ranks: The Great European Pivot and the Unraveling of the US-Israel Alliance

The geopolitical tectonic plates are shifting. In a move that few saw coming just a few years ago, Italy—a nation historically aligned with both the United States and Israel—has taken the dramatic step of suspending its long-standing defense cooperation with the Israeli government. This decision marks a watershed moment in international relations, signaling a profound rupture in the Western consensus that has dominated Middle Eastern policy for decades. As European nations increasingly prioritize their own national interests and sovereignty, the traditional “special relationship” between the West and Israel is facing its most significant challenge yet.
The Spark: A Failed Renewal
For nearly twenty years, the 2005 Defense Accord between Italy and Israel served as a cornerstone of their bilateral relationship. Ratified to encourage “cooperation in the area of defense industry procurement policy, military equipment, and technical data exchange,” the agreement was a symbol of mutual trust and shared security goals. It had been renewed every five years like clockwork. However, as the renewal date arrived this month, the Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, did the unthinkable: they let it lapse.
The decision was not made in a vacuum. Opposition parties in Italy had been mounting pressure for over a year, fueled by a growing public outcry over Israeli military offensives in Gaza and the broader Middle East. Lawmakers like Marco Grimaldi have hailed the suspension as a “victory for those who had protested Israeli aggression,” reflecting a broader sentiment across the Italian electorate. For Meloni, a leader who rose to power on a platform of “Italy First,” the political cost of maintaining the status quo had simply become too high.

Trump vs. Meloni: The Clash of Nationalisms
The suspension of the defense pact has not only strained ties with Israel but has also triggered a public and surprisingly vitriolic spat between Meloni and Donald Trump. Trump, in a telephone interview with an Italian newspaper, reportedly slammed his former ally, accusing her of “cowardice.” The former president’s ire was sparked by Meloni’s refusal to allow U.S. warplanes to use Italian bases for potential attacks on Iran, as well as her defense of Pope Leo against Trump’s criticisms.
“I thought she had courage, but I was wrong,” Trump reportedly said, expressing shock that Meloni wasn’t doing more to “get oil” and support his regional strategy. Meloni’s office has largely declined to comment, but the underlying tension is clear. Trump’s brand of nationalism expects a hierarchical alliance where “America First” means allies follow the U.S. lead without question. Meloni’s nationalism, however, is more literal: she is putting Italy’s own political, economic, and moral interests above those of her international partners.
This highlights a fundamental misunderstanding of the current nationalist wave sweeping the globe. Nationalist leaders like Meloni in Italy, Viktor Orbán in Hungary, and even the surging AFD in Germany are charting their own courses. They are increasingly unwilling to be “slaves” to international agreements that they perceive as detrimental to their own stability. When the U.S. or Israel creates a problem that threatens European interests—whether through refugee crises, economic instability, or moral compromise—these leaders are now more likely to step back than to dive in.
The Israeli Reaction: An Unhinged Response
Inside Israel, the suspension of the pact has been viewed as a catastrophic failure of diplomacy. Opposition leader Yair Lapid called the move an “embarrassing failure” of the Netanyahu government, noting that Meloni is not a “left-wing progressive” but a “natural ally” from the right-wing conservative camp. The fact that Israel is losing even its ideological friends in Europe is a sign of just how isolated the nation is becoming.
However, the response from some members of the Israeli cabinet has only exacerbated the rift. When German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed “deep concern” about the potential annexation of the West Bank, Israeli Minister Bezalel Smotrich delivered a response that shocked European observers. Smotrich told the Chancellor to “bow his head and apologize a thousand times on behalf of Germany” rather than “daring to preach morality” to the Jewish people.
By invoking the Holocaust to deflect any and all criticism of current Israeli policy, Smotrich and other ministers are engaging in a brand of rhetoric that many European leaders find increasingly “unhinged.” This strategy, which treats any rational actor with concerns as a “bigot” or a “Nazi,” is backfiring. Instead of shoring up support, it is alienating the very people Israel needs most.

The Strategic Calculus: Italy or Israel?
From a purely rational, American perspective, the fracture of the alliance with Italy raises difficult questions about U.S. priorities. Italy is a vital member of NATO, strategically located in the Mediterranean and home to massive U.S. and AFRICOM assets. It is a major global economy and a cultural cornerstone of the West. Israel, by contrast, is a relatively small nation that has increasingly become a source of instability and moral compromise for its allies.
As the current conflicts continue, more people are asking: Why would the United States choose the interests of one small country over the long-standing, stable relationships with critical allies like Italy, the UK, Australia, Japan, or South Korea? The total alliance with Israel has fractured these relationships, destroyed the “moral character” of the West in the eyes of the Global South, and placed American servicemen in harm’s way for goals that don’t always align with U.S. national security.
A Turning Tide
The decision by Italy is not an isolated incident; it is part of a broader trend. Across Europe, the tide is turning. Countries like Germany and France, which have historically had the strictest laws against pro-Palestinian speech and movements like BDS, are now seeing their leaders forced to voice concern over the situation in the Middle East. The sheer scale of the humanitarian crisis has reached a point where it can no longer be ignored by any rational political actor.
The break between Italy and Israel is a signal to the world that the era of unconditional support is ending. It is a victory for sovereignty and a reminder that true nationalism means looking out for one’s own people, rather than being dragged into the “madness” of someone else’s war. As we look toward the future, the question remains: will the United States continue to isolate itself by clinging to a fractured alliance, or will it follow Italy’s lead and begin to prioritize its own long-term interests and relationships with the rest of the world?
