Heated Senate Hearing: Hawley Presses General on Pronoun Policies
“Gender Ideology is Insane”: Josh Hawley Torches ‘Woke’ Nominee and Exposes Pronoun Mandates in Explosive Senate Showdown
In a high-stakes legislative confrontation that has rapidly ignited social media, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) delivered a blistering critique of what he describes as a “radical” and “insane” gender ideology infiltrating the United States military and the federal judiciary. The exchange, which took place during a recent Senate subcommittee hearing, featured a series of sharp rebukes directed at both military leadership and a judicial nominee, highlighting a growing cultural and political divide over the use of pronouns, biological sex, and the “woke” transformation of American institutions.

The primary flashpoint of the hearing centered on reports emerging from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. Allegations surfaced that an official communication had been circulated to base leadership, explicitly prohibiting the use of traditional pronouns and descriptors. According to the reports cited by Hawley, personnel were instructed to avoid terms such as “male,” “female,” “he,” “she,” “youngest,” and “oldest” in certain official contexts.
When Hawley pressed General Miller on the matter , the General initially characterized the situation as a “social media policy kerfuffle” rather than an official Air Force mandate. Miller contended that while an email may have been sent locally by a commander, it did not represent the formal policy of the Department of the Air Force . However, Hawley remained skeptical, citing news reports from August 2022 that detailed specific instructions given to Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) leaders to avoid gendered language to enhance “lethality” and “recruitment” .
“I was curious as heck how not using ‘he’ or ‘she’ can help with lethality,” Hawley remarked, his voice dripping with sarcasm. The Senator’s line of questioning tapped into a broader concern among conservatives that the Pentagon’s focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives is a distraction from the military’s core mission of combat readiness.
The tension escalated significantly when the focus shifted to a judicial nominee whose past writings suggested a radical departure from traditional legal interpretations of biological sex. Hawley confronted the nominee with an article she had penned for Time magazine in 2017, while she was serving as a sitting judge . In the piece, the nominee argued that gender is an “intricate continuum” rather than “two tidy boxes” and suggested that laws based on a “clear-cut interpretation of sex” are virtually impossible for judges to apply consistently .
The confrontation turned surreal as Hawley read back the nominee’s own words, which argued that legislative distinctions between male and female—specifically in the context of bathrooms and locker rooms—could be viewed as a violation of the separation of church and state.

“I have to tell you, I think these positions are insane,” Hawley declared flatly . “Totally insane. The idea that laws based on the distinction between male and female are a violation of church and state is insane. The idea that women’s locker rooms are protected from biological men… that those are impermissible… that’s insane.”
The nominee attempted to distance herself from the “broad” interpretations Hawley was drawing, claiming her focus was on the rare instances of intersex births . However, Hawley refused to back down, pointing out that her article used these rare cases to argue against the constitutionality of all gender-based laws, including those affecting girls’ sports and Title IX .
The exchange culminated in a demand for recusal. Hawley argued that because the nominee had already “pronounced” such definitive and radical views on biological sex, she would be unable to remain impartial in cases involving Title IX, bathroom bills, or women’s sports . “I will absolutely not vote for you,” Hawley concluded. “There’s not a world in which I could support you. If you are confirmed… you absolutely must recuse across all of these cases or stand in violation of the code of judicial conduct” .
Beyond the walls of the Senate chamber, the debate has sparked a fierce conversation about the psychological and operational impact of “woke” ideology on the front lines. Critics of the current administration’s policies argue that a military obsessed with pronouns is a military ill-equipped for the brutal realities of war. The sentiment expressed by many observers is that the military should be a “cohesive unit” focused on excellence, not a laboratory for social experimentation .

The hearing also touched on the stark contrast in military recruitment strategies. While the previous administration emphasized traditional strength and “bringing out the best in yourself,” the current “woke” recruitment ads have been criticized for focusing on personal identity over national service . Proponents of Hawley’s “common sense” approach point to a surge in recruitment interest as evidence that the American public prefers a military that stands on the firm ground of biological reality and meritocracy.
As the video of the exchange continues to garner millions of views, it serves as a stark reminder of the battle currently being waged over the soul of American institutions. Whether in the barracks or on the bench, the question remains: Will the country be guided by the “intricate continuum” of modern ideology, or the “tidy boxes” of biological truth? For Senator Josh Hawley and his supporters, the answer is a matter of national survival.
