Karoline Leavitt Labels Reporter a “Left-Wing Hack” in Heated White House Clash Over Minneapolis ICE Shooting
WASHINGTON D.C. — The White House Briefing Room, typically a venue for structured Q&A and policy announcements, transformed into an arena of raw political combat this afternoon. In a moment that has already set social media ablaze, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt engaged in a blistering, no-holds-barred confrontation with a reporter, labeling him a “left-wing hack” and accusing the media of complicity in violence against federal law enforcement.

The exchange, which centered on the volatile situation in Minneapolis and the conduct of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, highlights the deepening chasm between the Trump administration and the press corps, as well as the escalating tensions between federal authorities and state officials in Minnesota.
The Spark: A Question of Accountability
The briefing began with standard inquiries regarding the unrest in Minneapolis, where protests have erupted following a series of ICE operations. Governor Tim Walz’s office had reportedly sought direct communication with President Trump to “deescalate” the situation. However, Leavitt quickly dismissed the overture, questioning the sincerity of the Governor’s request.
“I would ask that the governor stops inciting the harassment and illegal obstruction of law enforcement in his state,” Leavitt stated, setting a combative tone early on. She presented photographs of individuals she identified as “illegal alien criminals,” asserting that ICE’s sole mission was to remove such dangerous elements from the community.
But the temperature in the room skyrocketed when a reporter—whose question Leavitt later interrupted—challenged the administration’s narrative. The journalist cited statistics regarding deaths in ICE custody and the detention of U.S. citizens, before pivoting to the specific case of Renee Good, a woman reportedly shot and killed by an ICE agent.
“Secretary Noem… said among other things that they are doing everything correctly,” the reporter noted. “How does that equate to them doing everything correctly… why was Renee Good unfortunately and tragically killed?”
When pressed on why the death occurred, the reporter offered his own assessment: “Because an ICE agent acted recklessly and killed unjustified.”
“You Should Not Even Be Sitting in That Seat”

That statement acted as a detonator. Leavitt, visibly incensed, launched into a furious rebuttal that targeted not just the question, but the reporter’s professional integrity.
“Oh, okay, so you’re a biased reporter with a left-wing opinion,” Leavitt retorted, cutting him off. “You’re a left-wing hack. You’re not a reporter. You’re posing in this room as a journalist.”
For several minutes, the Press Secretary berated the journalist, accusing him and his colleagues of “faking” objectivity while pushing an activist agenda. She argued that the premise of his question—that the ICE agent acted recklessly—proved his bias before any official investigation had concluded or been fully adjudicated in the public eye.
“Shame on people like you and the media who have a crooked view… and pretend like you’re a real honest journalist,” she declared, her voice rising.
The Defense of ICE: “A Shovel to the Face”
Leavitt used the platform to aggressively defend the actions of federal agents, offering a graphic counter-narrative to the reports circulating in mainstream media. Addressing the specific incident in Minneapolis that sparked the latest round of riots, she claimed that the media headlines were deliberately misleading.
“If you look at the headline from CNN… ‘Protests erupt after federal agent shoots man in Minneapolis’… that is not the truth,” Leavitt argued.
She proceeded to detail the Department of Homeland Security’s account of the event. According to Leavitt, the agent was executing a “targeted operation” against a Venezuelan national unlawfully present in the country. During the arrest, she alleged, the agent was ambushed by three other individuals.
“They used a shovel or a broom to smash his face in,” Leavitt described vividly. “And so yes, that agent had to use self-defense… to protect his own life.”
This narrative of self-defense stands in stark contrast to the “reckless” behavior alleged by critics. Leavitt painted a picture of law enforcement officers under siege, not just from criminals, but from a political environment that encourages hostility toward them.

The “Despicable Rhetoric” of Democrat Leaders
The Press Secretary did not limit her criticism to the press. She leveled serious accusations against Governor Tim Walz and other Democratic leaders, effectively blaming them for the violence directed at police and ICE agents.
Showing images of vandalized federal vehicles—one with “F*** ICE” spray-painted on the side and another with a message Leavitt summarized as “the best agent is a dead agent”—she drew a direct line between political rhetoric and street violence.
“People don’t do this without encouragement from people in power who make them feel like it’s okay,” she asserted. She referenced terms like “Nazis” and “Gestapo,” often used by left-wing critics to describe ICE, as “despicable rhetoric” that dehumanizes agents and invites attacks.
“The Democrat party has demeaned these individuals… and that is absolutely leading to the violence we’re seeing in the streets,” Leavitt said.
What About the Victims of Crime?
In a classic pivot often used by the administration, Leavitt sought to turn the tables on the moral argument. When the reporter mentioned the deaths in ICE custody, Leavitt countered by demanding to know why the media ignores the American citizens killed by undocumented immigrants.
“Do you have the numbers of how many American citizens were killed at the hands of illegal aliens?” she asked the reporter, who did not answer. “I bet you don’t. I bet you didn’t even read up on those stories.”
She invoked the names of Laken Riley and Jocelyn Nungaray—victims whose cases have become rallying cries for border security advocates—to highlight what she views as a double standard in coverage. The implication was clear: the media cares more about the rights of “illegal aliens” than the safety of American citizens.
A Nation Divided
The confrontation in the briefing room serves as a microcosm of the polarized state of the nation. On one side, an administration that views federal law enforcement as patriotic heroes besiege by criminals and political enemies. On the other, a press corps and a segment of the public deeply concerned about accountability, civil rights, and the use of lethal force.
As Minneapolis braces for another night of potential unrest, and as Governor Walz waits for a phone call that may never come, the war of words in Washington shows no sign of abating. For Karoline Leavitt, the battle lines are drawn, and she is not afraid to engage the “enemy” directly from the podium.
“You shouldn’t even be sitting in that seat,” she told the reporter. It was a statement that left many wondering: in this new era of political warfare, is there any seat left for neutral ground?
