General Manager Lin Dunn highlighted Clark’s potential during the team’s recent media day Wednesday, setting high hopes for her impact on the franchise and the sport.

“I see many characteristics between Sue Bird and Caitlin Clark some 20 years later,” Dunn said, per Michael Marot of the Associated Press. “When I look at the great guards I’ve seen over how many years now, 28 years, Caitlin has the potential. If she stays healthy, adapts quickly to the physicality of this league, she has the potential to have that kind of career.”

Larry Bird, renowned for his time with the Boston Celtics and later with the Indiana Pacers, and Sue Bird, celebrated for her success with the Seattle Storm and Olympic teams, are widely regarded to represent the pinnacle of basketball excellence.

Dunn expressed confidence in Clark’s capabilities, emphasizing her readiness to face the challenges of professional basketball.

“Caitlin has the potential. If she stays healthy, adapts quickly to the physicality of this league, she has the potential to have that kind of career,” DUnn said.

The excitement around Clark is not just about her skills but also her ability to draw fans. With her arrival, the Fever has seen a spike in ticket sales and an increase in national television coverage, with 36 of the Fever’s 40 regular-season games scheduled for broadcast. The surge in popularity recalls the enthusiasm that once surrounded Fever legend Tamika Catchings.

Security concerns have also been addressed by the team with Clark herself noting the proactive measures being taken.

“There’s going to be a lot of security traveling with us, there will be certain plans of how we’re going to navigate through airports. It’s not just for us, it’s for everybody in the WNBA,” she said.

On the court, Clark’s influence is already making an impact. Coach Christie Sides praised her for changing the team’s dynamic with her long-range shooting and precise passing. While some are hinting at a potential championship run, Sides remains focused on more immediate goals.

“When you talk to players, they’re always thinking we can win today, we can win every day. Our main goal is we want to make the playoffs,” Side said.

“That’s our main goal, but we have a plan in place and steps we want to make sure we don’t skip so we can obtain more sustainable success.”

Clark’s pairing with Aliyah Boston, last season’s unanimous league rookie of the year, adds to the anticipation of what the Fever can achieve. Veteran guard Kelsey Mitchell spoke about the potential on and off the floor.

“We can expand who we are in so many ways on and off the floor but especially on the floor,” Mitchell said. “We can do so many different things in so many different ways, scoring and defending the ball and just being aggressive because we are young. But, more importantly, we’re developing a great chemistry together.”

As the Fever and their fans look forward to the season, the hope is that Clark can mirror the impact that the Birds had on their teams and the sport. Dunn summed it up with a hopeful outlook: “Let’s hope she has the impact on this franchise that Larry had on his franchise.

“I think the great thing about her is that she makes everybody better on the court when she’s out there,” Dunn said. “She has that impact on people, she’s very unselfish and she’s an excellent passer. Does she have the potential to have a huge impact on our program? I think so.”
