The Las Vegas Aces defeated the Indiana Fever 88-69 on Tuesday night in the WNBA, with the Washington Mystics grabbing a late win against the Los Angeles Sparks.
The match-up was watched by a crowd of 20,336, the fifth-largest regular-season attendance in the sport’s history, and the largest regular-season crowd for a WNBA game for more than 20 years.
The Aces, champions for the last two seasons, were helped by 34 points from Kelsey Plum, while A’ja Wilson scored 28 with nine rebounds, and Jackie Young contributed 15 and 10.
Speaking after the match, Plum praised Wilson for her efforts after she continued her standout form for the season.
“You know she really averages 28 a game, like that’s just a normal day at the office,” she began.
“That’s absurd. You realise that, right? And everyone’s doubling and tripling and game-planning, and it really doesn’t matter. I think that we need to put into perspective. Just another night at the office, we take it for granted, but we’re watching one of the greatest players of all time in front of our eyes.”
Fever’s All-Star trio – Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell – contributed 54 points between them, the vast majority of their side’s total.
Clark contributed 13 points and 11 assists and believed the team were out of sorts.
“I think we missed quite a few shots that we usually make,” Clark said. “It’s tough to beat a team like this not being able to score the ball at the rate they did.
“There were moments where we played really good basketball, our third quarter was really great and we [came] out in the fourth and we didn’t start well at all and the game was kind of over from there.”
