Mahomes Mania: Chiefs Fans Naming Their Sons After Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in Heartfelt Tribute

In Kansas City, Missouri, the passion for the Chiefs runs deep, and for one family, that fandom has inspired a unique tribute to their favorite football stars. Lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fans Kaytee and Alex Wood have named their two sons after the team’s iconic players: quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce.

The couple’s journey into naming their children after Chiefs superstars began in 2020. Kaytee Wood recalls learning she was pregnant with their first son during the weekend of Super Bowl LIV, when the Chiefs triumphed over the San Francisco 49ers. Her husband, Alex, made a bold promise during the excitement of the victory, which ultimately led to naming their son Patrick, in honor of the Chiefs’ star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

“He made a lot of promises and said a lot of things, and we just decided to go with it,” Kaytee Wood said with a laugh. “Luckily, we also really loved the name.”

Three years later, in 2023, the Woods welcomed their second son. After much deliberation, they chose the name Travis, inspired by Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. “Everybody asked, ‘Are you gonna name him Travis?’” Wood shared. “We went back and forth for a really long time. We actually didn’t decide until he was born, but we decided to go with Travis.”

Now, at ages 4 and 2, Patrick and Travis Wood are too young to fully understand the significance of their names. However, their mother hopes they will grow to embody the camaraderie and teamwork displayed by their namesakes on the field. “I hope my boys end up having the bond that Patrick and Travis do on the field,” Kaytee said. “That’s kind of why we decided to name them as two best friends because we want them to grow up to be best friends.”

While the young Patrick and Travis have yet to show an interest in football, their parents are supportive of whatever paths they choose. “If they don’t want to play football, that’s OK, too,” Kaytee said, emphasizing that she and Alex will cheer them on in any endeavor they pursue.

For the Wood family, the names Patrick and Travis carry a special charm. During football season, the boys hear their names frequently on television, a delightful reminder of their connection to the Chiefs. Even though the family no longer lives in Kansas City, their Chiefs fandom remains a point of pride, and the boys’ names often spark conversations. “It’s kind of like an Easter egg,” Kaytee explained. “People definitely ask, ‘Really? Are they named after the Chiefs?’ But the people that know us well get it.”

Interestingly, both of the Woods’ sons were born in years when the Chiefs made Super Bowl appearances, prompting Kaytee to playfully suggest a third child named Andy, after head coach Andy Reid, in hopes of bringing the team more luck. “I’ve tried to convince my husband to have a third child and name them Andy,” she said with a smile. “He hasn’t gone for it yet.”

The Woods’ story is a testament to the deep connection that sports can foster, not only within a community but also within a family. For Kaytee and Alex, naming their sons Patrick and Travis is more than a nod to their favorite team—it’s a celebration of the values of friendship, teamwork, and loyalty that the Chiefs embody.
