WNBA confirms Rookie of the Year winner after Caitlin Clark releases emotional statement

The WNBA announced Thursday that Caitlin Clark was the 2024 Rookie of the Year, with 66 out of 67 voters selecting her as the winner, with Angel Reese getting to sole dissenting vote

Caitlin Clark has won the 2024 Rookie of the Year Award, the WNBA announced Thursday. The Fever star started in all 40 of Indiana’s games this season, helping lead the franchise to its first playoff appearance since 2016.

Clark averaged 19.2 points, a league-leading 8.4 assists, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals in 35.4 minutes per game this season. She led all rookies in most categories except for rebounding, where she was third, and Clark also ranked seventh in the WNBA in total points scored.

The 22-year-old also set the record for most assists in a single season with 337, along with setting the record for most assists in a single game with 19 against the Dallas Wings. Clark led the league in 3-pointers made (122), which is also a rookie record, and set the record for most points scored in a single season (769).

The Fever star was also named an All-Star, the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Month for August, a four-time recipient of the WNBA Rookie of the Month Award and was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for three straight weeks. She also was the first rookie in league history to record two triple-doubles in a single season.

So dominant was her rookie campaign that Clark was almost unanimously voted the 22-year-old Rookie of the Year. Of the 67 votes, 66 went in favor of Clark while one vote was for Chicago Sky star rookie Angel Reese, according to the WNBA.

As a result of the win, Clark will receive $5,150 and a trophy to commemorate her achievement this season. In a video released by the Fever shortly after Clark’s win, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert called head coach Christie Sides to relay the news to Clark herself as the team prepared for its playoff matchup against the Connecticut Sun.

“Caitlin, it feels like just yesterday when I called your name to the stage as the number one pick in this year’s drafted,” Engelbert began. “You held the Indiana Fever jersey for the first time and what a record-breaking season for you and the entire team full of outstanding performances and I know all of you had hard work and dedication and it’s paid off with your playoffs, etc.

“And I know the best is yet to come. So congratulations Caitlin. You are the 2024 Kia WNBA Rookie of the Year.” The WNBA’s announcement comes after Clark posted a statement summarizing her eventful rookie season.

On Wednesday, Clark took to X to pen an emotional statement: “Year one (check emoji) — thank you to the many people who have supported me as I’ve been able to live my childhood dream. I’m filled with gratitude as I reflect on this past year of my life. See you all in year two.”

And while Clark had a memorable season on the court, some of the luster of her accomplishments has been lost with how some fans have treated opposing stars that played against Clark. Toward the end of the season, it was noted that various WNBA stars received racist and homophobic messages from Fever fans.

This led Clark to issue her own statement denouncing those fans who go to games to specifically abuse WNBA stars of color. During her exit interview, the 22-year-old rookie made sure to let her stance be known to those using their fandom to promote hate.

“Nobody in our league should be facing any sort of racism, hurtful, disrespectful, hateful comments and threats,” she said at the time. “Those aren’t fans, those are trolls, and it’s a real disservice to the people in our league, the organization, and the WNBA.”
