Patrick Mahomes’ Dad Sends Strong Message to Chiefs’ Close Games as Andy Reid’s Opinion Clear on Late Broncos Win
As the dust settled in Kansas City on Sunday, the Chiefs remained the only team yet to be beaten this season. Although it looked like the Broncos did everything they could to beat the reigning Super Bowl Champions. They still didn’t manage to do it, as the Chiefs won it thanks to last-second heroics. However, that wasn’t the only time the Chiefs have left it late to win this season. As Patrick Mahomes’ dad shares his concerns with the Chiefs, leaving it to the final moments.
Popping up on Starcade Media with Noah Gronniger & Clint Switzer, Pat Sr. isn’t enjoying his son’s team’s way of closing games, “They could have lost 5 times.” Well, it could be true, as the Chiefs have only one game this season with over 10 points. Going back to their first game against the Ravens, the Chiefs saw Isaiah Likely’s last-second TD get erased for his foot crossing over the line.
Even the next week, facing the Bengals, the Chiefs saw a late pass interference call go their way. As they won by just a point in week 2. Those lucky instances didn’t end there, as the Chiefs saw their clash against the Bucs go into overtime. Thanks to Kareem Hunt’s 2-yard TD run, the Chiefs were able to maintain their unbeaten record going into week 10. And we all know what happened last Sunday. With the Chiefs winning in the final play, Pat Mahomes was asked about whether he was ever part of such close games in his MLB career.
In his professional baseball career that spanned over a decade, Mahomes Sr. didn’t remember one such instance, “No, I haven’t been a part of such close games, with every game coming down to the last possession.” Although he didn’t experience what his son is going through right now in Kansas City. Mahomes’ dad did express his wish to witness the Chiefs dominate a few games, “I did like to see a few blowouts.”
Well, Pat Mahomes could be concerned about the Chiefs winning in such a manner every week. However, their head coach, Andy Reid, had a clear opinion, watching his side seize their opportunities.
Amid Patrick Mahomes dad’s concerns, Andy Reid praises his team
Broncos kicker Wil Lutz was all set to snap the winning streak with his 35-yard field goal attempt. But up came an unlikely hero from the Chiefs’ special teams, Leo Chenal, jumping the highest to block Lutz’s attempt. It ended up being a massive moment as the Chiefs extended their winning run to 15 games going back to last year. Although they had to rely upon two field goals in the second half to win on Sunday.
Reid spoke highly of his team taking advantage of their situations, “I mean, that was probably the epitome of it coming down to that last-second deal, literally. A block. We’ve been given opportunities and we’ve taken advantage of them, and then we’ve made a few opportunities ourselves with some good plays.” While praising his players for stepping up whenever needed to see out their victories, Reid did appreciate the Broncos’ effort, “You’d probably say that the Broncos outplayed us, and then they end up not winning the game.”
It was one of those days when Mahomes was sacked four times while failing to help the Chiefs score a touchdown in the second half. Relying upon their kicker, Harrison Butker, the Chiefs managed to save their blushes. Well, Reid wasn’t the only one who credited the Chiefs’ display on that last play. As Sean Payton gave credit where it’s due, “Credit them for that. They exploited an area that we obviously felt was fixed and stronger. But not fixed enough.”
Although the Chiefs could be 9-0 heading into next week’s NFL action. They could have lost a few of those, if not for their winning mentality and some help elsewhere. However, Mahomes’ dad is right to point out that his son’s team needs to stop leaving it late. Otherwise, their unbeaten record could come to an end sooner rather than later.
