DeAndre Hopkins’ Old Patrick Mahomes Tweet Resurfaces After Trade to Chiefs
Five-time All-Pro WR posted 3-word message about Mahomes last year
Down their top two receivers, the Kansas City Chiefs acquired some help for quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Wednesday, sending a fifth-round pick that can become a fourth-rounder to the Tennessee Titans for five-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins.
The addition of Hopkins should stabilize a Chiefs WR room that took serious blows when Marquise Brown was likely lost for the season after injuring his shoulder on the first play of the team’s preseason opener, and Rashee Rice was lost for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury (with a similar recovery timeline to an ACL tear) in Week 4.
JuJu Smith-Schuster is also battling a hamstring injury which will keep him out of Week 8’s matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Chiefs nearly signed Hopkins when he was a free agent in the summer of 2023 before he ended up signing with the Titans. Because of Kansas City’s pursuit of the 32-year-old wideout, it should come as no surprise that Hopkins is a big fan of Mahomes.
So after he was traded to the Chiefs on Wednesday, an old tweet of Hopkins’ resurfaced from February 2023 in which he praised Mahomes two days after KC’s 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Though Hopkins has been battling his own knee issues all season, he should still be a difference-maker in Kansas City. He caught 15 of his 21 targets for 173 yards and a touchdown in six games with the Titans, who have gotten far worse QB play out of Will Levis and Mason Rudolph.
The Chiefs’ top two leading receivers in Sunday’s win over the 49ers were both tight ends, and Xavier Worthy as the only true WR with more than one catch. Tight ends Noah Gray and Travis Kelce both had four catches, while running backs Kareem Hunt and Samaje Perine combined for three catches for 27 yards.
If Hopkins plays against the Raiders on Sunday, he’ll lead a thin group of receivers that includes Worthy, Mecole Hardman, and Justin Watson.
