Patrick Mahomes has only good things to say about Caitlin Clark amid speculation he could soon own his own WNBA team.

The three-time Super Bowl champion and his wife, Brittany, are being touted as potential investors in a new expansion that could be coming to Kansas City. The WNBA is already due to grow by one next year when the Golden State Valkyries join the league as its 13th team.

ESPN’s NFL reporter Adam Schefter reported Mahomes and his spouse are already in discussions with the league regarding the move. And the Chiefs quarterback is already fast friends with Indiana Fever sensation Clark as he looks to delve deeper into the world of women’s basketball.

“I mean, [she’s] just a tremendous player, tremendous person every time I’ve met with her and talked,” he said of the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year ahead of the Super Bowl in February 2024. “You can tell she loves the game.

“She loves playing at Iowa, and she’s gonna be one of the best women’s, one of the best college basketball players to ever play. And then go to the WNBA and dominate there as well. Hopefully I’ll never have to play her one on one, because she’ll for sure be getting buckets on me.”

Clark, 22, has spearheaded a movement in bringing a wealth of new fans to the WNBA since she joined the league earlier this year. She and former college rival Angel Reese played major roles in what was a record-breaking season for women’s basketball, setting new benchmarks for attendance and viewership as interest skyrocketed.

Mahomes, 29, is further along in his sporting journey but played his own part in keeping NFL fans engaged over the past seven years or so. Clark’s fellow first-round pick has consistently featured as one of, if not the best quarterback in the league since being drafted in 2017.

The WNBA could do a lot worse than recruiting Mr and Mrs Mahomes as investors, too, considering their experience in the field. The couple hold a major footprint in Kansas’ sports scene after investing in MLS outfit Sporting Kansas City, MLB franchise the Kansas City Royals and the NWSL’s Kansas City Current.

Having a hand in starting a team of their own from the ground up feels like a natural next step. And Mahomes’ long-held appreciation for Clark is an indicator he and his wife could be just the people for the job if the WNBA does come to Missouri.
