New Satellite Footage Shows Naval Base Damage and U.S. THAAD Radar Knocked Out
Blinding the Superpower: New Satellite Imagery Reveals Iran’s High-Stakes Strategy to Cripple U.S. THAAD Radar Systems
The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has moved into a devastating new phase, characterized by high-altitude surveillance and surgical precision. Recently released satellite imagery provides a stark, unvarnished look at the results of the “shadow war” that has finally stepped into the light. While the U.S. and its regional allies have focused on dismantling Iran’s physical military infrastructure, Iran has adopted a “blinding” strategy, targeting the high-tech sensors that give the American military its overwhelming advantage. This article explores the details of these strikes, the strategic logic behind them, and the long-term implications for regional security.
The Dismantling of Iranian Military Power

The first set of satellite images focuses on the Bushehr Naval Facility in Iran. Traditionally viewed as a repair and maintenance hub, this facility is a vital node for the Iranian Navy’s ability to keep its fleet operational. The imagery reveals the aftermath of a series of highly accurate strikes. Six distinct impacts can be seen, each landing directly in the center of various warehouse and maintenance buildings. These weren’t just random hits; they were designed to penetrate the structures and detonate inside, ensuring the total destruction of any vessels or equipment undergoing repair.
The damage extends beyond the buildings. Several light patrol boats, which were seen being repaired in “before” photos, have been scattered across the base, presumably moved in a desperate attempt to shield them from further strikes. In another section of the base, three naval patrol boats on dry land appear to have been “pinged” by shrapnel, marked by black scorch marks across their hulls. Most notably, a generic non-military ship has capsized near the docks—whether knocked over by the sheer force of a nearby shockwave or abandoned during the chaos remains unclear.
The air campaign has been equally relentless. Satellite photos of the Hamadan Air Base and Tabriz International Airport show a deliberate effort to ground the Iranian Air Force. Both facilities show craters “bang in the middle” of their primary runways and taxiways. This strategy is simple but effective: by rendering the runways inoperable, the U.S. and its allies have effectively turned Iran’s fighter jets into “sitting ducks.” At Tabriz, at least two aircraft—identified by some as an F-5 and the legendary F-4 Phantom—were seen destroyed on the tarmac. With the runways cratered, these aircraft cannot be moved or hidden, allowing subsequent strikes to pick them off at will.
Iran’s Tactical Counter-Strike: Blinding the Radar

While Iran’s physical infrastructure is being hit hard, their response has been far more tactical and focused. Instead of attempting to match American fire for fire, Iran has focused on a strategy of “blinding” the U.S. and its allies. By targeting advanced radar and communication systems, Iran aims to make American bases and the surrounding cities vulnerable to future drone and missile attacks.
The most significant of these counter-strikes took place in Qatar and Jordan. In Qatar, satellite imagery suggests a low-flying drone strike successfully hit the AN/FPS-132 phased array radar. This system, which faces Iran across the Persian Gulf, is a massive, multi-billion-dollar installation. The imagery shows debris and significant water runoff, likely from firefighting efforts.
The strategic weight of this loss cannot be overstated. According to a report by Foreign Policy, replacing a system like the AN/FPS-132 could take five to eight years and cost over $1 billion. The situation is further complicated by the global supply chain; these advanced radars rely heavily on Gallium, a material that is 98% controlled by China, making a quick replacement nearly impossible.
In Jordan, Iran scored what is being called its “biggest victory yet” by targeting the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. The strike successfully hit the AN/TPY-2 forward-base X-band radar, the primary sensor for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. The THAAD is an anti-ballistic missile defense system designed to intercept missiles during their descent or re-entry phase. It relies on kinetic impact—meaning it doesn’t use a warhead but simply smashes into its target at incredible speeds.
The U.S. only possesses a limited number of these batteries—roughly eight in total. Each battery relies on a single radar unit. By knocking out even one of these radars, Iran has created a massive hole in the regional missile defense net. Ground-level photos circulating online confirm the satellite data, showing a badly damaged radar unit following the strike.
The Raid on Al-Udeid and Communication Hubs

The Iranian counter-offensive also extended to the Al-Udeid Air Base, one of the most important American facilities in the Middle East. While the zoomed-out imagery makes it difficult to see the full extent of the damage at first glance, closer inspection reveals several successful hits on storage areas and buildings near taxiways.
One storage depot was hit particularly hard, showing extensive fire damage. While there were no obvious signs of secondary “cook-offs” (which would indicate ammunition storage), the destruction of general base equipment and maintenance facilities still degrades the base’s operational capacity. However, the “biggest cheese” of the Al-Udeid raid was the radar area. At least five successful impacts were recorded, destroying not only the radar radomes but also nearby buildings.
These radars likely serve multiple purposes, from air control to long-range communications. By taking them out, Iran is making it increasingly difficult for the American military to coordinate its operations and detect incoming threats.

Conclusion: A War of Attrition and Visibility
The satellite imagery tells a story of two different philosophies of war. The United States and its allies are using their overwhelming air superiority to methodically dismantle the Iranian military machine piece by piece, starting with the very ground their planes take off from. They are playing a game of total dominance.
Iran, on the other hand, is playing a game of selective vulnerability. They know they cannot win a conventional battle against a superpower, so they are focusing on the “eyes” of that superpower. By destroying billions of dollars’ worth of radar equipment that takes years to replace, they are hoping to level the playing field, making American bases just as vulnerable as Iranian ones.
The stakes are incredibly high. If Iran continues to successfully target these sensors, the U.S. may find itself in a position where its superior firepower is tempered by an inability to see what’s coming. Conversely, if Iran’s air force and naval repair hubs are completely neutralized, they will have no way to defend their territory or project power in the Gulf. As the smoke clears from these recent strikes, it is clear that the war for the Middle East is being fought not just on the ground, but in the realm of radar waves and satellite pixels.
