Caitlin Clark continues to lead the Indiana Fever closer to a playoff birth. Unfortunately, controversy with a WNBA legend continues to dominate the headlines.
Clark and the Indiana Fever played in Dallas on Sunday. Sheryl Swoopes is normally a member of the Dallas Wings broadcast team. However, Swoopes was not on the sideline on Sunday leading many to speculate that the league wanted to avoid a potentially touchy situation. Swoopes ignited a controversy back in February when she questioned many of the collegiate records that Clark was setting at Iowa.
So was Swoopes ‘replaced’ by Nancy Lieberman on Sunday? Actually, no. Swoopes, Lieberman, and Fran Harris were announced as analysts back in April and that they would rotate throughout the season according to Awful Announcing. There is no doubt many wanted Swoopes off the Fever game, but don’t forget, Swoopes already worked an Indiana Fever game and interviewed Caitlin Clark afterward!
Swoopes has continued to take hits from people stating that she is too hard on Clark. Awful Announcing reports that Swoopes has downplayed some of the hard fouls that Clark has received this season. Another clip that went viral last week showed Swoopes going silent when Clark was shown on screen as one of the WNBA players of the week.
While Swoopes hasn’t done much to help her own cause, she may have finally done so yesterday when she revealed private messages that she sent to Caitlin Clark. In the message, she apologizes for the false statements that she made earlier this year.
In classic Caitlin Clark style, she thanks Swoopes for all she has done for women’s basketball. Will this end the supposed bitterness between the two? Hopefully. I can’t imagine Caitlin Clark giving it much thought. She has the playoffs to think about!
