“Stay Out of Politics!”: Tom Homan Blasts Pope Leo XIV Over Immigration Criticism
“Stay Out of Politics”: Border Czar Tom Homan Issues Blistering Rebuttal to Catholic Church Over Immigration Criticism

In a political landscape often defined by carefully scripted soundbites, Border Czar Tom Homan has shattered the mold with a raw, deeply personal, and uncompromising defense of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. In a series of high-stakes comments that have sent ripples through both Washington D.C. and the Vatican, Homan—a lifelong Catholic—has publicly urged the leadership of the Catholic Church to “stay out of politics” and focus on the internal issues of the church rather than critiquing national security measures they “do not understand.”
The confrontation marks a significant escalation in the tension between the current administration and religious institutions. For months, various leaders within the Catholic Church, including high-ranking Cardinals, have voiced concerns over the morality of mass deportations and the construction of massive detention facilities. To Tom Homan, however, these criticisms are not just misguided; they are dangerously detached from the harrowing realities of the U.S.-Mexico border.
A Lifelong Faith Under Fire
Homan’s critique carries a unique weight because it comes from within the fold. “I love the Catholic Church,” Homan stated during a recent media engagement. “I’m a member—baptized, first communion, confirmation. But I just wish they’d stick to fixing the church because there are issues, I know, because I’m a member.”
This internal friction highlights a growing divide among the American Catholic laity, many of whom find themselves torn between the humanitarian teachings of their faith and the security-focused rhetoric of the administration. Homan, however, sees no contradiction. In his view, a secure border is the ultimate expression of human compassion. He argues that by discouraging illegal immigration, the administration is effectively putting human traffickers out of business and preventing the horrific exploitation of vulnerable migrants.
The “Inhumane” Reality of Open Borders

One of the most striking aspects of Homan’s rebuttal is his reliance on four decades of law enforcement experience. He challenged church leaders to “wear his shoes” before passing judgment on the ethics of his work. His descriptions were graphic and visceral, designed to ground the abstract theological debate in the mud and dust of the borderlands.
Homan recounted standing in the back of a tractor-trailer surrounded by 19 “dead aliens,” including a five-year-old boy who had “baked to death” in the sweltering heat. He spoke of the trauma of interviewing a nine-year-old girl who had been raped multiple times by cartel members during her journey north. To Homan, these are the true “inhumane” outcomes of a system that encourages people to make the dangerous trek across the border.
“If they understood the atrocities that happen on an open border, I think their opinion would change,” Homan asserted. He contends that under the previous administration, hundreds of thousands of Americans died from fentanyl and thousands of migrants perished in the wilderness. By contrast, he claims that a secure border—which he says reduced illegal immigration by 97%—is the most “humane” thing the country can provide.
The Battle Over Infrastructure and “Sanctuary”
Beyond the war of words, Homan is focused on the logistical requirements of his mandate. He is currently pushing for the construction of federal detention facilities, sometimes referred to as the “warehouse plan.” This strategy is designed to bypass the resistance of “sanctuary jurisdictions” that refuse to house ICE detainees.
Homan’s logic is pragmatic: if the federal government owns the property, states and cities cannot prevent them from enforcing immigration law. He argued that having detention centers near major cities is actually more “humane” for the immigrant community, as it prevents the need to fly detainees to distant states, away from their legal representation.
“We need 100,000 beds to run a mass deportation operation,” Homan explained, emphasizing that the “American people put [the President] in there to run” this operation. Despite the controversy, Homan remains steadfast in his belief that the infrastructure must be built now to ensure an efficient and legal removal process for those with final orders of deportation.
Clashes on Capitol Hill
The Border Czar’s frustrations are not limited to the pulpit; they extend to the halls of Congress. Homan accused House Republicans and Democrats alike of trying to “cripple” ICE through appropriation laws and reconciliation. He specifically targeted the idea of “sensitive locations”—policies that would prevent ICE from making arrests in places like churches, hospitals, or schools.
Homan challenged his critics to name a single instance where ICE had violated the sanctity of such a location without a significant public safety or national security threat being present. He argued that these policies are being used as a “sanctuary” for criminals rather than a protection for the innocent. “If you’re a significant public safety threat or a national security threat, there should be no sanctuary for you,” he declared.
A New Era of Enforcement

As the interview concluded, Homan reaffirmed his commitment to the administration’s “no amnesty” pledge and his confidence in the new leadership at the Department of Homeland Security. He praised Secretary Mark Wayne Mullen as “the right guy at the right time,” signaling that the pace of enforcement is only set to increase.
Homan also made it clear that “sanctuary cities” like Minneapolis will be the primary targets for ICE deployment. He pointed to recent successes where cooperation with local law enforcement led to the removal of high-level public safety threats, and he urged other jurisdictions to follow suit rather than releasing “criminal aliens” back onto the streets.
The message from the Border Czar is clear: the era of “open border” policies is over, and neither the halls of Congress nor the pews of the church will stand in the way of what he deems a necessary and humane mission to secure the nation. As this debate continues to rage, the collision between religious ethics and national security remains one of the most volatile flashpoints in American life today.
